Robert Crumb is known for his disturbing, yet compelling, underground cartoons: his most famous works made countercultural icons out of Mr. Natural (”Keep on Truckin’…”) and Fritz the Cat. Terry Zwigoff delves into the odd world of the cartoonist in his documentary film Crumb, and the picture that emerges is not always pretty–at moments, it’s almost repellent–but it’s a fascinating glimpse into a very strange mind. Interviewing immediate family–Crumb has one suicidal brother, one semi-psychopathic brother, two sisters who declined to be interviewed, and a tyrannical mother–Crumb begins to look a bit saner. Given his surroundings, it’s remarkable that he has survived so well. His hostilities toward women may turn some viewers off, but his wife, Aline, seems to be a grounding point, and she provides a solid counterbalance to the man. No one shies away from discussing incredibly intimate things (namely, sex!), which explains much of R. Crumb’s cartoons. This documentary can definitely be considered a masterpiece for the cult crowd, and as for the rest of us, it’s sure to make us feel a little better about our own lives! –Jenny Brown

Boxing movies have had a set of conventions that started in the 1930s and ran all the way up through the Rocky series and beyond. There’s the hard-luck underdog contender, the talented boxer who’s manipulated by crooked promoters and managers, the outside-the-ring love affair, the score to settle for a fellow boxer, the family tensions over the boxer’s career and the climactic match against the big mean champion. Knockout manages to bring all of those ingredients to the table and mix them together. Maria Conchita Alonso plays the lovely and talented Belle, a young boxer with a future. Her dad is an ex-prizefighter himself, pursuing a career in law enforcement; his partner is Belle’s love interest. Belle’s mother died of a brain tumor some 15 years previous. When her friend, homegirl, and sparring partner is put in the hospital by the champion, Belle trains with a vengeance to take the title away and even the score for her friend’s sake. This is a movie that tries very hard but is so riddled with the hoariest boxing cliches and trite dialogu that it can never rise above being heavy-handed and predictable. It’s too bad, because the direction is competent and the performances are strong, but the by-the-numbers storyline breaks no new ground whatsoever. Granted, it’s hard to rewrite the rules of the boxing movie, but Knockout’s brand of prizefight melodrama veers from the formula only by featuring a Latino setting and female fighters. On the plus side, the fight scenes are well-choreographed and tough, but they have the weight of the rest of the movie working against them. Knockout isn’t bad, but for even the most casual fan of boxing movies, you’ve seen it before. –Jerry Renshaw

In Affections Touching Across Time (2001), the moth-demon Menomaru seeks to reclaim the powers of his father, who was defeated by Inu-Yasha’s father during the attempted Mongol invasion of 1274. The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass (2002) evokes the Japanese legend “The Tale of the Bamboo-Cutter,” when Kaguya appears, claiming to be the legendary Moon Princess. Swords of an Honorable Ruler (2003) reveals that Inu-Yasha’s father, the Great Dog Demon, possessed not two but three swords: Tetsusaiga, Tenseiga, and Sounga, which are linked to Earth, Heaven, and Hell, respectively. When the Sounga is accidentally freed, its aura raises the soul of Takemaru, the samurai who murdered Inu-Yasha’s mother. The villains in Fire on Mystic Island (2004) are the Four War Gods, powerful demons on the island of Houraijima, who preserve and augment their power by sacrificing half-demon children. The later films are darker and more violent, although the directors balance the mayhem against familiar comedic elements, especially Kagome and Inu-Yasha squabbling. The features all reflect larger budgets than the television series, as the filmmakers employ a variety of CG effects: explosions, lightning bolts, insects, monsters, and strangling tree roots. Affections Touching Across Time stands out as the handsomest of the films, with designs that suggest the woodblock prints of Kawase Hasui. The set includes CDs of the movie soundtracks and a booklet on the traditional Japanese instruments they feature, although more information on composer Kaoru Wada would have been nice.
