Watching “Queen of Outer Space” is akin to watching a 1957 Miss World contest while on hallucinogens. Plot summary: Earthmen’s rocket is knocked off course by a mysterious “death beam”, where it lands on Venus, which is populated solely by women. The women wear mini-skirted tunics, with the exception of “Queen Iliana”, who dresses like an evil, masked Auntie Mame, and “Tolleia”, beautiful scientist and rebel leader, played by gorgeous Hungarian Zsa Zsa Gabor, in a series of glamorous gowns. Zsa Zsa is carefully “posed” in every shot, particularly her long-shots, where her leg is “artfully” protruding from the thigh-length slits in her gowns. Tolleia and many other man-hungry females secretly oppose the man-hating, pizza-faced queen (MEN were responsible for her radiation-burned face beneath her mask). Tolleia utters the famous line, “I hate her–I HATE zat queen!” The Earthmen, together with Tolleia and her followers, tamper with Queen Iliana’s “Beta Disintegrator”, with which she plans to destroy Earth. It blows up, reducing her to a charred mannequin, and Tolleia is proclaimed the new queen. This film is irresistibly enjoyable, from its kitschy sets (The queen’s palace looks like a cross between a burlesque theater and a leftover set from “What’s My Line?”), to the hubba-hubba women’s costumes, to the men’s costumes, evidently leftovers from “Forbidden Planet”. Evidently, someone at Allied Artists had access to MGM’s wardrobe department! Some of Anne Francis’ “Forbidden Planet” costumes are worn by Lisa Davis, who plays one of Zsa Zsa’s compatriots. The silly dialogue, ridiculous sound effects, and a paper-mache giant beetle add to the general hilarity of this comic-book version of the battle of the sexes. Needless to say, this film has an enormous gay following. How could it not? Zsa Zsa writes in her book, “One Lifetime is Not Enough”, that her line, “I hate zat queen”, gets big laughs from her many gay friends. The lady is extremely entertaining. I may also add to the unitiated that Zsa Zsa was at the peak of her beauty in this film. It’s no wonder she had all the men in a spin. You can’t accuse her of not having a sense of humor, and she’s certainly NEVER dull!

When a spaceship from Earth has technical problems, the crew is forced to make an emergency landing on Venus. They salvage equipment from the wrecked ship and set up a camp to ponder their fate. During the night, the astronauts are awoken by miniskirted Amazon women, who order them to “bachino”, which means “move it” in Venusian. Next, they meet the fashionably attired Zsa Zsa Gabor who becomes the crew’s ally. She tells them that every man on Venus has been imprisoned on another planet by the mysterious “Masked Queen”. The Queen’s hatred of men is quite perplexing. She wants to be loved, yet she refuses the advances of one of the crewmates she so obviously desires. The suspense is overwhelming, and it keeps building until the end. Rarely has Hollywood produced such a magnificent film that has been so vastly underrated since it’s release.

Cary Grant is cast as the commander of the Sea Tiger, a sub held together by a lick and a promise. Tony Curtis is cast as Lt Nick Holden. He was assigned sea duty as a punishment, and is very outside of his element. Since the country is at war, supplies are very scarce, and Holden discovers that he does have a talent in being a thief. If they can’t get a requisition filled, Mr. Holden can find it. This crew has one catastrophe after another, and then they get stuck with team of nurses that are stranded. This is a hilarious movie that will make you laugh out loud. The cast is superb, and not just the talent of Grant and Curtis, but all the supporting players.

Tony Curtis and Cary Grant are perfect in this movie.

Cary Grant is the Commander of the Sea Tiger, a submarine with more problems than crew members.

His troubles begin when the sub sinks before even leaving the harbor during a Japanese raid. Commander Sherman (Grant) and his men begin working to repair and bring up their beloved sub despite the fact that their requisition orders rarely are filled.

Due to the fact that some of his men were reassigned to other duties after the raid, Sherman is granted some “replacement’s”–enter Lt. Nicholas Holden (Tony Curtis).

Holden is in the Navy not for the purpose of country but for the uniform so he can impress his rich girlfriend back home. Since he is no longer winning the rumba championships with the Admiral’s wife he must settle into a role on the Sea Tiger–scavenging for items to repair the sub.

With new and inventive ways of obtaining supplies (taking the wall from headquarters and stealing supplies from beneath the noses of MP’s) the Sea Tiger once again becomes sea worthy–barely.

None of the scavenging trouble Nick Holden causes Commander Sherman can even compare to the new passengers he brings aboard: a crew of female doctors, pregnant women and goats.

Cary Grant is charming as ever and deals with the many, many problems and situations thrown at him in such funny ways. Tony Curtis is equally charming and lends very much to this film.

The supporting cast can be likened to the “Down Periscope” crew of 1959. Each character brings something new and unusual to the storyline.

You definitely will not be disappointed if you buy this DVD. I recommend it highly.

This disc was Rhino’s first attempt to package Monkee episodes in the then-new DVD format. Clips of each of the Monkees from their 1997 documentary are conventional to introduce their well-liked episodes.

It has already been distinguished that the episode that Davy mentions is really “Royal Flush” (”Hitting the High Seas” is shown instead as his well-liked) . “Royal Flush” would have been a better choice because it would’ve balanced the DVD better to have 2 episodes from the first season and 2 from the second, instead of having 3 from the second and only 1 from the first.

The film quality was a bit of a disappointment, especially during parts of “Fairy Record”. The quality is considerable better on Rhino’s second Monkee DVD (Monkees Volume 1 & 2) although there are some suitable moments on this disc. Some of the episodes have the unique kill credits with Kellogg’s products. It’s fun on both discs to discontinue the characterize and exercise the “step” button on your DVD remote to seek things that have never been noticed before on VHS copies.

The chapter breaks are distinguished better than on Rhino’s second Monkee DVD and there are actually breaks for all of the songs in each episode; even the Kellogg’s commercial shown during Mijacogeo has a chapter demolish.

Since the DVD format was mild young when Rhino released this, it has no extras, not even closed-captioning. It’s too unpleasant that the Monkees couldn’t have recorded audio commentary in addition to introducing the episodes. A photo gallery and some more Kellogg’s commercials wouldn’t been a nice extra also.

Fans desparate for any Monkee episodes on DVD will want to engage this up but retain in mind that the VHS edition is packaged better in a retro-style metal Monkee lunchbox with a mini-ceral box and puzzle. This DVD will have to do as a “stand in” until Rhino gets around to issuing the entire series on DVD.

A nice belief by Rhino, having the four Monkees prefer and discuss their common episodes. The dvd shows the episodes in their entirity with bonus features including commercials featuring the Monkees and interviews with the band. Three of the four episodes are suited, but the Davy Jones entry (Out to Sea) is a exiguous mature. Since no other Monkees TV episodes are currently available on dvd, this disc is a must for any Monkees fan who wants to gaze the shows on a digital format. It also makes for a nice introduction to the group’s shows for the unique or casual fan.

When I saw a trailer for this film, I saw it compared with “Fargo,” the Coen brothers classic. My spouse and I were both in need of a laugh so we went to see it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream New In Town! Click Here

I must agree with at least one other review that it’s an absurdly predictable story. Boy meets girl, they despise each other, yet fall in love and they all live happily ever after. That element of the story was a letdown. But there were enough laughs to redeem the story.

I’ll paraphrase, and perhaps add a little to another review: Rene plays Lucy Hill, a rising Yuppie corporate exec based in Miami. The company decides to send someone to Minnesota to close one of their plants. None of the guys will do it so Lucy volunteers. She, in true, corporate tradition, has her eye on corporate VP, something she’s going to get when she faithfully fulfills the company’s goals, right?

Buy,Download, Or Stream New In Town! Click Here

Well, when she gets to MN, she has so little perception of the conditions–cold, slippery–that she is, alas, a fish out of water. She meets her assistant, masterfully performed by Siobhan Fallon, who is an exaggeration of Frances McDormand’s role in “Fargo.” Her one-liners had both my spouse and I “ROFL”ing. I do have a comment though on Fallon’s (Blanche Gunderson’s) monolog: She asked Lucy if she’s found Jesus, and that became the cause for a burst of laughter from both Lucy and presumably the audience. I thought that question to be slightly incongruous; it’s something one would have more likely experienced in, say, Mississippi or Georgia than in New Ulm, MN.

Well, then, Lucy, while secretly trying to close the plant, meets fireman Ted Mitchell (Harry Connick) when she flew off the icy road. They eventually fall in love… Well, the synopsis has already been written here so I won’t repeat it.

In the process, not only is love fallen into, but Lucy decides that, shucks, these are nice people. (The story reminded me of Michael J. Fox’s “Doc Hollywood” and countless other scripts.) She decides to keep the place open, and they come up with a new product, blah, blah, blah.

From an honest perspective, while I was laughing at the script, I found that portion of the story to be a complete fantasy. Most of us know how corporations work these days. First, the product they came up with (no, I won’t give it away here and spoil the story) wouldn’t compete with the corporate, pre-packaged and advertised product. Second, no, the corporation’s not going to say, “Aw, shucks, let’s be nice to these folks whom Lucy told us are are so quaint.”

Then, without giving any more away, Lucy and Ted fall in love, and they all lived happily ever after.

Hmmm. I’m quite critical of the story. So why do I give it four stars? Because of the laughs.

Again, I think the idea of the accent was a product of McDormand’s academy award winning role in “Fargo.” In this film, they may have made a little more of a caricature out of it. One of the Minnesotan characters, by the way, was played by one of my heroines, Frances Conroy (I’m a big “Six Feet Under” fan). But it was so well done, it had me laughing thoughout.

Then there’s the scene when Ted and Lucy try to disguise their indiscretion so that Ted’s daughter didn’t know what happened, another side-buster. But the choreography necessary of Lucy while Ted and Lucy were hunting and nature called was worth the price of the ticket.

No, I won’t give away any more than that, but it was hysterical.

Again, as others have already said and more will surely say, if you’re after a soul-enhancing, humanitarian, or realistic story, this one might not be for you. That ain’t the way life works except maybe in the movies. but if you’d like some hearty laughs–maybe a little to deliver you from what’s going on in today’s economy, this is a side breaker.

Although marketed as a comedy, this has little in common with the DRECK that Hollywood has been churning out under the “comedy” label (e.g. Bride Wars) because the point of this film is to progress to more sophisticated characterization and understanding as its main character finds herself in a “fish out of water” setting, transplanted from Miami to a small city in Minnesota.

This film contains aspects of mild drama that enhance its credibility and respectability greatly. Characters become fully humanized as the film progresses, even if they at first seem like caricatures or stereotypes. That’s a main theme of the film – that people mis-judge each other all the time in ways that turn out to be unfair.

This is a good-hearted, well-played film that, although not really new in theme or plot, carries a message that is well worth repeating, and does it very well through good performances and an enjoyable script. Critics really do not serve the public well when they presume that something that’s been “done before” is therefore inferior as a result, for films within the same subgenre are never truly identical, and it all boils down to the problem that “critics” are reviewing EVERYTHING, regardless of their own prior interest in the film, and “critics” often lack any clear training or expertise to inform their opinions, and “critics” are often left simply reacting to each other in weird contests about who can find the film that is the most “original” – which usually ends up meaning the most aberrant and demeaning and cynical.

By contrast, “New in Town” delivers an “old-fashioned” message that truly deserves to be a Hollywood tradition… a nicely American message of overcoming the various sociocultural divides that exist in our country, of cutting through the many stereotypes that downplay and dismiss other people (and categories and groups), and instead coming to appreciate the good aspects of different lifestyles and preferences that exist throughout the country.

In this film, some of the social divisions that are addressed and dealt with include the urban/rural (or “small town”) split, a blue-collar/white collar split, a college educated versus trades/crafts skill-based social class division, monetary wealth vs. budgeted fulfillments, religious/secular divides, and conflicting aspects of provincial/cosmopolitan perspectives. This is all enough to compose a very laudable, effective, engaging, entertaining, and yes, even thought-provoking film! Of the kind that can actually have people reflecting on and working on improving their own shortcomings and building bridges to get along with others or at least able to see their points-of-view.

Very well done!!!!

Firstly let me point out that there is a DVD version of EOD, several actually. The best version is the latest released this year which is a wonderful transfer and includes a documentary on the film, Magnox and has clips of interviews and award ceremonies and discussions on the series. It is on region 2 DVD and is available from amazon uk. I too remember watching this masterpiece unfold when it was originally screened here in the uk. I was only 14 at the time and British television was still producing some wonderful stuff. Even so I knew this was something extra special. It must have planted a seed in my subconscious. Incredibly in 2003 it has lost none of its power and seems just as prescient now as ever. The callous disregard for the individual by corporations, the ‘great game’ played out between competing security agencies, the conspiracy of silence in the media. The ecology movement. The collusion of government with the malign constituents in our society. Ostensibly though this is still the ‘little man’s story’ and what a central performance from the late great Bob Peck. His personal disintegration is harrowing to behold as he tries to unravel the mystery. Joe don Baker, what can you say about his performance. He is utterly compelling as the old school agency man fighting to keep his head above water. His verbal sparing matches with ‘arts council’ funded MI5’s Ian McNeice and Charles Kay (also superb) are very very funny. Oh the script, what a script. Troy Kennedy Martin the writer provided the most consistently brilliant screenplay for television ever written. Martin Campbell the director sculpts it all into an entity that supplants the TV media. The DVD I saw previously to EOD was Leone’s masterwork Once upon a time in America and I can honestly say EOD which bares many similarities is right up there alongside it. I don’t think I could give this production a better accolade.

Probably the finest television drama series ever, ‘Edge of Darkness’ was 1985 made flesh – nuclear paranoia in a world gone mad. Apart from the faces, not much has dated, and even if the threat of nuclear annihilation seems less newsworthy, it’s still an excellent, taut thriller. Bleak and brilliant, it starts with a seemingly random murder, and ends with the world on the brink of apocalpyse.

Everything works, and works well – the clever, non-linear direction is never annoying, the writing is intelligent, everything progresses with brutal, cold logic, and it all seems so much more serious, more ‘real’ than other television dramas of the time (with the possible exception of the early ‘Taggart’). The acting is superb – Joe Don Baker’s character may be a stereotype, but he makes it work, and the late Bob Peck is almost disturbingly intense. It’s a shame that, for most people, he will be remembered as the unfortunate trapper from ‘Jurassic Park’ (or the narrator of countless nature documentaries).

It remains with you when its over, the music is excellent, and key images (nuclear trains at the dead of night, driving rain on the motorway, a room full of telephones, a field of umbrellas, and little black flowers) haunt you forever.

First off, it’s best to mention that this OVA is not a good way to be introduced to Saikano. Viewers will gain a great deal more if they have seen the show first.

For only two episodes, a lot more happens in this space of time than in the rest of the show. Yet this OVA relies on following events that take place early on in the show. Hence why it’s important to watch the series first.

While the series was mostly told through Shuji’s point of view, the OVA is more 3rd-person, with emphasis on new character Lieutenant Mizuki and Chise. In fact, Shuji has no major involvement at all, apart from constantly being on Chise’s mind.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Saikano OVA – Another Love Song! Click Here

This OVA is good in that it explains more. In the series, viewers don’t know really know the “how” or “why” Chise was made into the ultimate weapon. We get those answers, but once again, the “how” or “why” isn’t as important. Themes of war, being human, and love are still going strong. We see more of Chise’s internal struggle between her human self and the weapon inside, and how her feelings for Shuji affect her actions.

New character Mizuki is the perfect foil for Chise. Mizuki is fiercely dedicated to her role as both a soldier and a weapon. She is fearless, determined, stubborn, and intelligent. As the prototype of the weapon that Chise will become, viewers will learn why Mizuki’s ability never equaled or surpassed Chise, and how this makes her feel and dictates her actions. Mizuki also has connections to Tetsu, and interactions between them I felt were important because they shed some light on how Tetsu was with Chise. Oddly though, this seems to contridict how he felt about his wife, Fuyumi, who is just barely mentioned. Mizuki, while in a position to be resentful of Chise, proves to have the potential to be Chise’s friend and confidant, the best hope Chise had of having someone who understood how she was feeling. Even Shuji had a hard time grasping this at first in the series.

Mizuki is also a tragic character, as are many characters in the Saikano canon. And true to Saikano, this short piece is emotionally driven, heart-wrenching; there’s only a glimmer of a happy ending.

Overall, this OVA could easily fit into the anime series. It’s a nice compliment to it, but seeing it isn’t necessary to understand the actual show. But it’s a must for Saikano fans.

First off I will let you all know that I have not yet seen the series which this OVA is based on, but rest assured I will do so as soon as I can.

Japan is at war; with whom and for what reason is left entirely unexplained, but judging from the fact that the “enemy” speaks English, drives Abram tanks, and flies F-4’s, I’d say that it is America and her allies who are fighting Japan (again). The war, however, is not going well for Japan, not well at all. Their cities are being burned, their troops killed by the thousands in the streets, their Air Forces destroyed on the ground. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and so a special branch of the military begins work on what is simply called “the ultimate weapon.”

After all I’ve read on Saikano I very much expected the OVA which is based on it to be somewhat of a quick summery of the show from which to judge if this was something I was willing to pursue. Much to my surprise though the main characters from the show, Chise and her boyfriend either play secondary roles or are nonexistent entirely. Instead the OVA focus on Commander Mizuki, a woman who was transformed into a weapon of war after she was mortally wounded in battle. She is a prototype, not nearly as powerful as Chise, but she has one thing the little high school girl does not; the will to fight. Mizuki is a soldier who puts the well being of her nation and its people above all else. But when she starts hearing Chise’s thoughts she begins to realize what a grave injustice it was to force Chise into the military and to transform her, against her will, into a weapon of war.

The main problem I had with this short series is that at the end it was left incomplete, I guess to get people to watch the series. As a part of the series, this may be a very good companion, but as a stand alone OVA its dull and moves too quickly for the viewer to get a good sense of who these people are and what exactly is happening. Chise is clumsy and shy, and she is in love with someone we never see, but other than that who is she? I realize she’s a secondary character but there really isn’t much information on her. Mizuki, on the other hand, gets a lot more character development and her personality is well fleshed out.

But the main problem I had was the war itself. Would it really be so hard to tell us just what is going on? Why is Japan at war? And who exactly are they fighting? Nothing about the war, which is critical to the series, is explained. It’s simply there. This might have been fine if some clues were given, but the few they had were confusing at best. For instance, one “enemy” soldier, who looks Asian, speaks English yet talks about how Japans secret weapon (Chise) destroyed his home city “in like a minute.” So Japan used Chise to attack America? Or did she attack China, which is much closer. Other “enemy” soldiers look typical American and have US uniforms as well. It would have also been nice for there to have been some sorts of explanation on how hundreds of missiles could majicly come out of Chise’s back.

Also, the battles for the most part all follow the same pattern; enemy troops invade, Japan’s soldiers overwhelmed and retreat, Chise or Mizuki come to the rescue and drive off the attack with their super powers. Any questions? That’s pretty much what all the battles are like.

The music and animation were pretty good for the most part. The battle scenes had some really annoying guitar music, but for the sad moments it was nice classical violin music which really set the scene nicely. The animation on the other hand was exhalant. No complaints in that department. The character designs were well done, while the battle scenes were nothing short of awe inspiring.

Re-play value; Low.

I saw this movie in the theatre on opening night. I serene indulge in watching it. The acting in this movie is vast, and the storyline is top notch as well. I reflect the movie represents the attitudes in exiguous town America as they were. I know of many cases in trusty life that were a lot like this dwelling, but in proper life the protagonists faired worse than Kevin Bacon. I have heard a lot of poor reviews about this movie from people who spy it today. Mostly because it is a “white” film with almost no racial diversity considering the subject matter. Well, you have to scrutinize at the social and cultural context in which the film was made to originate with. I happened to live in a petite colorado town during my teen years and HELLO we only had 1 dim family in the town. That was reality, as it was in many shrimp towns. And as for the music, mind you, this was about 4 years before the forthcoming of the rudimentary forms of rap and hip hop. Micheal Jackson had more white fans than dismal, and most blacks listened to rock and roll. You cannot deem this film by unique standards and do it justice. I consider that if you retain an originate mind you will indulge in this film a astronomical deal.

I loved footloose in the 80’s and I level-headed admire it now! It is definitely a classic, along with Top Gun. This movie will always be one of the best – Kevin Bacon was extraordinary! The soundtrack is ample, too!

rug cleaning 1

Rug Cleaning
is the most tedious chore in-spite of the fact that they beautify your homes. Sometimes purchasing them could be an expensive affair and sometimes they may be delicate. So in order to protect your investment and keep their shine preserved, you need to avoid few common mistakes and follow few tips while Rug Cleaning

which can increase the life of your rug.

You are hereby advised not to beat the rug as thumping can break up the woven threads resulting in the tearing of the rug backing.

Do not vacuum the fringes of the rug as vacuum cleaner will engulf the fringes into its beater bar and fringes will get untied and become curly and ropy.

You are also advised not to use rug sprays or shampoos because if they are not rinsed out thoroughly, they will catch more dust making them look dustier.

If still you have any intention to shampoo the rug, then first sweep the rug so that imbedded dirt gets slackens. Sweeping should be followed by vacuuming so that dust is removed thoroughly. This will make the rug appear cleaner and may hold up your plans of shampooing the rug.

You should also make sure that stains on the rug should be cleared as soon as they occur. On the basis of type of stains or spills, they are to be blotted or scraped. You can blot it by pressing with a dry clean towel from the outside towards the center. Repeat this action by folding the towel till the most of the moisture has been absorbed. If the milk has been scattered, then the affected part should be properly rinsed with the mild soap and water so that the residue doesn’t rot. Incase of greasy spills and sugar based drinks spills, proper cleansing and rinsing is also required with relevant cleaners.

You are also recommended to sprinkle mixture of 2 cups of cornmeal and one cup of Borax to nullify the pet smell. Leave this mixture for about an hour before vacuuming.

As rugs get dirty quite often, you can also call professional companies to do this job but this could be expensive. But with little heed, rug cleaning can be done easily at home.

carpet cleaning 1

Carpets are the house owner’s prodigy, and to keep them cleaned is the necessity. Carpet Cleaning can be done by both the conventional as well new technological advanced methods Carpet Cleaning
chemical manufacturers established the five key cleaning methods after twenty years of their research, particularly dry-cleaning and Green based chemicals.

The commercial procedures of carpet cleaning involve steam cleaning i.e. Hot Water extraction involving the utilization of detergent based solutionsSecond procedure is dry cleaning that utilizes very little moisture and relies on the dry compounds supported by the application of cleansing solutions. This process is often swift and labor intensive as compared to wet extraction systems. The next method Dry compound method requires biogradable powder and cleaning compound for cleansing carpets These compounds are spread all over the carpet and then brushed or scrubbed over it.

For the not so big areas, a small household hand brush can be utilized to clean out the filth and then it is vacuumed keeping carpet well cleaned and dry. The fourth process is Bonnet method which involves club soda and cleansing product; both are combined with each other and scattered over the carpet and small machine known as round buffer or bonnet is moved over the mixture into rotating motion. This method involves more time in drying and is not advised for deep cleaning.
Shampoos are also being generally utilized for carpet cleaning.

This system was most popular till 1970 but it soon lost its position when Encapsulation system of carpet cleaning came. The process of Encapsulation is new technology for carpet cleaning which involves crystallizing soil particles into dry residues. It’s deep cleaning compound crystals absorbs the filth before clearing it from the carpet. For this process, rotary machines, bush applicator or compression sprayer are utilized for applying solution and then vacuum cleaner is used to clear dry residue. This system increases the beauty of the carpet better.

There are number of home made procedures for Carpet Cleaning too like vacuuming, stain removing, making use of brushes, brooms etc to provide your carpets a neat, clean and long life.

The 13th Warrior is a loose adaptation of Michael Crichton’s equally loose adaptation of Beowulf. It stars Antonio Banderas, not someone you’d request to look in a Viking swordfighting movie, plus a bunch of unknown (in the US) Nordic actors. All in all, you wouldn’t request considerable out of this movie. And you’d be spoiled. It’s chock-full of colossal fight scenes, proper writing, perfectly delivered dialogue and a location that actually makes sense. It’s basically everything that unique fantasy movies lacked until the coming of the Lord of the Rings. The movie’s generally available for a extreme mark in most stores, and that’s unbiased one more reason to have it. Every fan of medieval or fantasy action/adventure movies should have a copy of this love on their shelf.

It wasn’t until I read Eaters of the Plain by Michael Crighton that I realized it was the basis for the movie the 13th Warrior. It also is a correct account. That is what is so fabulous. This movie has been a family approved for many years, and I highly recommend it.
