Under Rittikrai’s no-holds-barred direction, Chupong plays Deaw, an elite undercover cop who takes a break after the costly arrest of a drug-cartel kingpin to attend a charity event with his sister Nui (Tae Kwon Do champion Kessarin Ektawatkul) in a remote, impoverished village. When the entire village is held hostage by a siege of terrorists with a nuclear missile aimed at Bangkok, Deaw unites the village in a bold act of defiance, and Born to Fight’s simple plot kicks into overdrive with some of the most astonishing and genuinely life-threatening stunts ever filmed. And while Born to Fight was not a hit when released in Thailand in 2004 (and only later gained an international audience), the amazing cast offers an abundance of charisma and skill to compensate for the overly familiar plot.

The patriotic retaliation against terrorists includes combatants of all ages and abilities, from the fiercely compact Sasisa Jindamanee (junior champion of Thai kick boxing) to an elderly man and even a one-legged villager who does his part for king and country. And consider this lineup of diversely skilled performers: Nantaway Wongwanichislip (Asian champion rugby player); Piyapong Piew-On (Thai football superstar); Rattaporn Khemthong (Thai gymnastic team star); Subsak Pansub (from the Thai Sepak Takraw team); and Amornthep Waewsang and Somrak Khamsing (Olympic gold medalists in gymnastics and boxing, respectively). As a squadron of fearless daredevils, this remarkable cast employs every imaginable techniqu to conqur their captors. With an opening action sequnce that must be seen to be believed, Born to Fight may be far-fetched at times, but the stunts are so insanely impressive that they make this a must-see film for action fans around the world. Disc 2 includes a 65-minute “making of” documentary, featuring extensive interviews with the producer, director, and principal cast of Born to Fight, and a shorter, 5-minute featurette promoting the film’s diverse cast of athletically skilled performers. Ghosts of Mars may not be one of John Carpenter’s finer efforts, but you can’t knock the veteran director for staying tru to his roots–it’s clearly a Carpenter film, reveling in its B-movie blood lust, and fuled by the director’s rock & roll rebellion as well as the sex appeal of star Natasha Henstridge. This rickety sci-fi/horror hybrid recalls Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13, with various connections from throughout the director’s career–for better and worse. It’s the year 2176, and human colonists on Mars are controlled by a political “matronage,” with women (for reasons unexplained) holding court in the capitol city of Chryse. Mars Police Force Lt. Ballard (Henstridge) has been sent to retrieve James “Desolation” Williams (Ice Cube), the planet’s most notorious criminal, from a remote mining-colony prison. With her ill-fated crew, Ballard discovers that the colonists have nearly all been possessed by ancient Martian spirits bent on reclaiming the planet, turning them into an army of self-mutilating freaks suggesting an unholy union of Marilyn Manson and the sadomasochistic Cenobites from the Hellraiser films. None of this makes much sense, and the shaky alliance between cops and criminals is a predictable excuse for rampant battle scenes between surviving humans and the ghost-possessed maniacs. Exotic weaponry abounds (along with cheap special effects and some laughable dialogu), resulting in the grusome dispatch of expendable costars Pam Grier, Joanna Cassidy, Robert Carradine, and Clea Duvall. Driven by Carpenter’s synth-metal score, this violent free-for-all has a few brief highlights, but it’s suspenseless and ultimately absurd. It’s not much, but for loyal fans it’s probably enough. –Jeff Shannon

The introduction of color takes a bit of the magic out of Bewitched, but adorable toddler Tabitha brings her own special enchantment to this third season, which earned Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series. Also nominated were Elizabeth Montgomery as sophisticated, albeit domesticated, witch Samantha, Agnes Morehead as her disapproving mother Endora, and Marion Lorne as addled Aunt Clara, whose mis-spellings wreak havoc in the Stephens household, as when she unwittingly conjures up Ben Franklin in “My Friend Ben.” As the season begins, “typical average baby” Tabitha reveals her heretofore-dormant supernatural powers. In the next episode, “The Moment of Truth,” Darrin (Dick York) is distressed to find out about his daughter. “Remember ‘normal’?” he wails to his wife. “We were going to have a normal married life” Though one laments that Serena is missing in action, the return of Bernard Fox as Dr. Bombay (in “There’s Gold in Them Thar Pills”) and Paul Lynde’s practical joker Uncle Arthur are always welcome, even if Arthur’s feud with Endora in “Endora Moves in for a Spell” never reaches the comic heights of season 2’s “The Joker Is a Card” (the Yagazuzie Zim episode).

Other venerable character actors cast their distinctive spells, including Estelle Winwood (”Hold Me, Touch Me” in the original The Producers) and Reta Shaw (Mary Poppins) as Endora’s sisters in “Witches and Warlocks Are My Favorite Things; Marty Ingalls as a rival ad agency spy in “Dangerous Diaper Dan”; Norman “Mr. Roper” Fell as Sigmund Freud(!) in “I’d Rather Twitch Than Fight”; and, in a bizarre cameo, Willie Mays as one of Endora’s Halloween party gusts in “Twitch or Treat.” (”You mean he’s a…,” Darrin stammers. “The way he hits home runs?” Samantha replies, “What else?”). Sandra Gould, replacing Alice Pearce, joins the cast as busybody neighbor Gladys Kravitz. One of the season’s most enjoyable episodes is “A Most Unusual Wood Nymph,” which allowed York to break out of his confounded husband character to portray the lusty Darrin the Bold, a cursed 14th-century ancestor. And with the sight of the ravishing Montgomery in a castle-maid costume, who needs extras in this otherwise charmed four-disc set? –Donald Liebenson

Ice Cube has turned his frown upside down with the family-friendly screwball road movie Are We There Yet? We know the actor/rapper can use his trademark scowl to be funny (the Friday and Barbershop series), or to be mean (Boyz in the Hood)–but can he use it to melt kids’ hearts? That’s the qustion Are We There Yet? answers with a resounding yes for youngsters in the audience (which will be the lions’ share), but it’ll probably be an emphatic shrug for the grownups. The contrived plot has Cube playing a wannabe-player (as in ladies’ man) and ex-player (as in washed-up minor leagu baseball star) who now owns a sports memorabilia business. His partner, played by Jay Mohr is just a throwaway, as is the talented Nia Long, the single mom that Cube sets his blinged-out sights on. To try to get in her good graces, he offers to transport her two bratty kids in his pride-and-joy Lincoln Navigator for a joy ride to a distant city where she’s attending an emergency business meeting so they can have a New Year’s Eve celebration together. This kiddies version of Road Trip and Planes, Trains and Automobiles has its cute moments, but plenty more gross-out moments which will please the kids no end, especially as the Navigator gets more and more trashed. Suffice it to say they all learn about each others’ good sides and hearts are suitably melted all around–until after the credits roll, then you’ll probably forget about the whole thing.–Ted Fry
