The Wonder Pets fly onto the scene once again with “Save the Dinosaur!,” featuring four fun episodes of the show. In this DVD, the wonder pets visit everywhere from the Statue of Liberty to the magical land of a dragon.

The DVD’s banner episode is “Save the Dinosaur! / Save the Pigeon!” This is a fairly interesting one in which they first travel to prehistoric times to save a dinosaur. They then visit the Statue of Liberty, where they find a baby pigeon who is stuck on the statue’s nose and needs help flying. Music from this story is featured on the “Wonder Pets!” album release.

The other episodes on the DVD are “Save the Dragon! / Save the Beaver!,” “Save the Bee! / Save the Squirrel!” and “Save the Dolphin! / Save the Chimp!” The first two are fairly fresh content. The latter is one of the earliest episodes and aired as the series premiere in some markets. “Dragon! / Beaver!” and “Bee! / Squirrel!” are fine examples of the series in particular, taking the series in some new directions — such as showing one of the human characters who lives in the classroom the pets inhabit, and using only instrumental music during the openings.

I give this DVD 4 stars for its excellent program content. Unfortunately, this DVD once again continues the practice of the “Wonder Pets!” DVDs either not including decent special features or not including any at all. In this case, it includes the same old promos for other Nick Jr. shows, and that’s it. It would be nice to get some extra content.

Episodes run about 10 minutes so it’s perfect for preschoolers. Each episode presents a problem (a baby animal in trouble) and then a practical solution to solve that problem helping kids acquire new skills along the way.

Save The Dinosaur: A dino gets stuck betweeen some rocks and can’t get out. Teaches kids that oil (or slippery stuff) helps wiggle things loose.

Save the Pigeon: A baby pigeon is stuck on the nose of the statue of liberty. Wonder Pets convince the pigeon that he needs to try. Even if it’s hard, all you need to do is try.

Good lessons for small kids.

At a low point, she writes a scathing indictment of her own books (which are penned under another name), with no one realizing critic and author are one and the same. Almodovar (Law of Desire) has the start of a great idea here, and for once, he’s direct about his sympathy for a character. But nothing else about The Flower of My Secret is so clear. Despite its unusual allegiance to the straightforward “women’s films” of the 1950s, this movie blows it by becoming needlessly complicated over extraneous junk, forcing one to grope in the dark for Almodovar’s point. –Tom Keogh

Abel Ferrara’s adaptation of William Gibson’s cyberpunk story (from the short-story collection Burning Chrome) is quite faithful to the source, which may explain why it bypassed cinemas almost completely to emerge on video. Gibson’s story takes place entirely in flashback as its hero shuffles through the events that brought him to the tiny shoebox of a room in the New Rose Hotel, on the run and out of ideas. Ferrara winds up in the same place, but first plays out his story for us to see… sort of. Industrial headhunters Christopher Walken, limping through the movie with a cane and a rumpled white suit like an emaciated Sydney Greenstreet, and Willem Dafoe, his jaded, tired partner, hatch a plan to lure a genetic-sciences genius from one corporation to another for a $100 million payoff. The key to their plan is seductive bar girl and part-time prostitute Asia Argento, a flirting chanteuse with whom Dafoe falls in love. Set in a grimy technological future of generic cosmopolitan cities, the characters wander fluorescent mazes of bland malls, murky bars, and faceless hotels, a Blade Runner future without the spectacle. Apart from brief, blurry video-camera surveillance, the entire operation occurs offscreen, reported through conversations and phone calls, and even Ferrara fans may find the murky, dawdling narrative and cerebral conclusion disappointing. But the tech-noir conspiracy gives way to Ferrara’s real story, the collision of the dreamers and the shadowy world they live in. –Sean Axmaker

As a member of the Disney Movie Club, this title was one of their exclusives, previously available only on their website and in their club. I hope the aspect ratio as stated here on Amazon is fair, because this same DVD at Disney was pan-and-scan, full-frame, fullscreen, whatever you want to call it. I have a laserdisc which is 2:35.1.

Recommended more for quality of live performance than for storytelling, VH1 Storytellers: Classics is a seven-song compilation from the popular VH1 series, bearing all the strengths and weaknesses inherent in the program. Some of the featured musicians are fine raconteurs, and the format of the show encourages them to share the genesis of their best-known songs. Pete Townshend explains that the title of “Baba O’Riley” was a combination of two people who inspired him when he wrote the song: Indian spiritual teacher Meher Baba and electronic musician Terry Riley (he added the “O’” for a touch of Irish flavor). David Bowie explains how “China Girl” arose from a collaboration with Iggy Pop after a moving experience in a Berlin punk club; and before launching into an outstanding performance, Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen describes “Kid Charlemagne” as an allusion to the passing of the 1960s.

Other performers have little or nothing to say about the songs they perform (when asked, Rod Stewart shamefully can’t recall who originally played mandolin on “Maggie May”), but virtually all of these performances are first-rate and fully deserving of their inclusion. Surprisingly–or perhaps not–Ringo Starr provides the highlight, recalling how his melancholy feeling of exclusion during the recording of the Beatles’ White Album led him to take a holiday in Sardinia. It was there that he was inspired to write “Octopus’s Garden,” and his performance of that song–with his hand-picked band the All- Stars–is as purely delightful as the original recording. –Jeff Shannon
