Years ago after my first visit to Egypt, the University of Minnesota sponsored a film festival of Egyptian made films and this was one among them. Although it features film stars with whom many of us will already be familiar, Irene Pappas, Anthony Quinn and Michael Ansara, it was directed by a Moslem director, Moustapha Akkad, and has the effect of approval of the Al Azhar Mosque and University (the oldest University in the world and an institution powerful respected in the Islamic world for its Koran scholarship) .

While it carries a religious message for Islamic people–in fact I saw parts of it again on Saudi TV as fraction of the Ramadan season’s celebration while I was working in Tabouk–it also explains in a sympathetic map for Western viewers many of the basic tenets of Islam. It is as bright a epic in its contain arrangement as the stories of the Fresh Testament are for Christians, and it portrays the essence of what Moslems bear about Mohamed and their faith. The simplicity and straight forwardness of the memoir as it portrays the sacrifices of dumb people for their convictions and the ultimate triumph of estimable over base will appeal to anyone with a sense of gorgeous mindedness regardless of ones religious convictions. The light in which it places Christians cannot fail to trace. Mohamed’s more vulnerable followers are told to discover asylum with the King of Abyssinia (current day Ethiopia), because as a Christian king he was their “brother” and high-tail by the “book” to protect them from their oppressors, which indeed he does! Nor are the Jews spoken ill of in the myth.

The exact cinematography is a minute dated, and the fable can be a tiny postured, but no more than any other film of the 1960-1970s. How many can sit through a John Wayne western without a dinky smile, whether of nostalgia or of amusement, and yet the color, pageantry and triumph of the apt guys in the face of blatant execrable is unruffled a treat. The film is a attractive work, and the sage is enchanting, informative and well worth viewing. Tickled I finally found it on DVD.

I am not a Muslim, however, this movie presents a very historical and lawful record of the struggles of Islam and the development of this religion. This is a movie you will luxuriate in watching regardless of your religious preference. I found myself having a worthy greater plan of Muslims and a very deep respect for their faith after viewing this film. I highly recommend it for anyone and all ages. I am very surprised this movie was not a box office fracture. One of the best I have ever seen……it answers a lot of questions and presents some enormous opportunities for interfaith opinion. As an American this film was a special “inspect opener” for me.

I had a fun time watching this movie, and the film has the kind of recognition that EVERY single customer that saw it screening knew they wanted to leer it (again for most of them) . The Blu is definitely a mixed bag though. I own everyone knows of the epic by now, and watching these two approved eye-candy actors do their thing keeps the masses entertained as they plunge from dislike to appreciate of one another.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Proposal! Click Here

The Blu clarity has the high budget feel throughout, but in this case to a fault. The green veil coloration is prevalent in any outdoor scene, at times almost appearing deliberately groundless (the boat scene after she falls in the water was so apparent you impartial raze up looking past it and focus on the heartfelt moment as was intended) . On the second viewing I listened to the writer/director commentary to pick up out why they shot in Massachusetts instead of Alaska, and as usual it boiled down to money. They did collect a few mountain panoramas but the 1080 only gets to explain the precise ones for a diminutive or two total. The 5.1 DTS sounds mammoth and gets utilized the best during the strip/bar scene (hilarious sequence) . The supplements are bittersweet and include:

* The alternate ending. A device different style of ending that had some hilarious actor(s) completely deleted from the film. It is without the effects so you immediately eye how distinguished green mask was being dilapidated – we are talking walls and cranes worth.

* 6 minutes of deleted scenes. Understandable.

* Plot Antics as hosted by Aasif Mandvi. 6 minutes worth, you might salvage a couple chuckles out of it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Proposal! Click Here

* Digital copy of the film on disc 2.

* Commentary by Fletcher and Chiarelli. They acquire some (sporadic) decent material on there, and by their possess admission they admit theirs is how not to do a commentary, but I had to hear all the whys on filming area and volumes of effects for a romcom.

The menu is a corny absorbing style, but all of the selections have an on/off for commentaries.

I laughed and enjoyed the film, but the solid clarity shows all of the glowing line failings throughout as each window background and exterior shot though-provoking mountains becomes glaringly false at the seams. Not a 5-star benchmark Blu (what should have been had it actually been filmed in Alaska) so four for the film and supplements.

‘The Proposal’ was a genuinely sweet, droll, and charming movie. Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock, the film’s two main stars, had some grand chemistry that made all of their scenes together quite enthralling. I must say, all of the actors turned into tall contributions. Hold an inspect for Malin Akerman (of Watchmen fame) and Oscar Nunez (piece of The Office’s stellar cast) . Of course, this was a romantic comedy through and through- you could gawk the ending coming from fair about the film’s open. But that’s really piece of the fun, isn’t it? ‘The Proposal’ was a laugh-out-loud hilarious movie with honest the fair amounts of charm and even a flow of drama. I have no doubts that the Blu-ray, with its included digital copy, won’t disappoint.

GI Joe was so spacious for 2 reasons: 1) It had a sure kind of credibility despite how over the top it always was, and 2) The Characters and their intertwining relationships. The stories were often amusing, and over the top but always a lot of fun. It was a unusual cartoon because despite that it always created an atmosphere of misfortune for the heroes. There were even times when the terrible guys and the first-rate guys had to work together to catch through situations at times, and that was cold. Even the abominable guys had deep relationships.

Buy,Download, Or Stream G.I. Joe A Real American Hero: Season 1.2! Click Here

This DVD station contains the middle third of the first season, 21 episodes. They all have very creative memoir lines that while over the top were fun to behold. The first episode Twenty questions is a lot of fun, and involves GI joe Shipwreck trying to expose to some reporters that Cobra does indeed exist and proves a threat. The enormous thing about these episodes was that the writers were always thinking outside the box. There were episodes where Cobra wasn’t the indispensable awful guy “The Viper is coming”, “The Gamesmaster”.

The over the top myth lines were so titanic because the writing was collected so first-rate, and somehow made the display more credible because of the shrimp details.

I deem the relationship between Cobra Commander and Destro is summed up beautifully in the episode “Lights, Camera, Cobra!” at the raze of the episode. Cobra Commander says to Destro “You saved me!” And Destro responds “I saved a customer,”. That’s the kind of explain it was, it was for the older kids, but it was unruffled fun because the writing was calm somehow really apt. I acquire the expose to be a lot of fun because it was so unpredictable even for a “kids reveal”. This explain only got better as it went on, so pause tuned for more seasons!

Descendents of darkness… or more accurately its Japanese title Yami no Matsuei concerns two Shinigami’s (Gods of Death) the affable, sweet toothed Tsuzuki and his modern, surly at times partner Hisoka. It is their jobs to guide lost souls to their judgment while at the same time confronting their have black pasts, which seem to revolve around a rather pleasing, silver haired doctor.

Yami no Matsuei is definitely one of my all time favourite shows. Although short (13 episodes in total) it is a exhibit many I have known described as special impartial because it is so gorgeous. The scene in the church when Tsuzuki meets Muraki for the first time is particularly breathtaking.

Be warned though it is a point to that is definitely not for kids (although for some unfamiliar reason it is only a +13 rating) it is violent, sunless and deals with occultish themes. The main thing to be warned that it is YAOI!! Yes you will perceive men getting nice, romantic and angsty with other men ^_^ personally I have no problems with that but it is determined that some people do…

That aside I have no reservations about recomending this present, it is dazzling titillating, comical and sweet at times, has an sharp storyline (which is presented in arcs…sets of 3 or 4 episodes) and extraordinary characters.

Another plus is that the tell actors in this prove are some of the best. Tsuzuki is wonderfully done by Miki Shinichiro but for me the trusty explain stealer is Hayami Sho as Muraki Katazuka. He is perfect blend of sexy, sensual yet dangerously creepy at the same time.

I cant say I am not crazy about the name change, but hey as long as they are releasing it I am not complaining ^_^ My other qualm is how the english cast is going to match up to the japanes.

The only other thing I dont really like is the hide. Be warned I have only seen the sample hide and in the raze (fingers crossed) I hope CPM gives it a distinguished better shroud as the artwork is so stunning.

Summary: elegant demonstrate,if you like bishonen (fans of X) and shonen ai (fans of Gravitation) prefer this DVD you wont be dissapointed

This is one of the GREATEST series ever, in my humble concept. I would have to admit though, that it probably won’t pick up popularity with many guys. It’s mainly aimed at chicks, and boy does it ever hit the brand. I was getting really tired of shows where a bunch of pretty-boys ran around and killed things, so Yami no Matsuei (Decendant of Darkness) is such a nice change of plod. Obvious, ALL of the main characters are damn well-behaved looking, and that’s half the fun. But beyond that, it’s got an *extremely* superb spot, and one of the most though-provoking CONCEPTS of any anime out there. The premise: The hero, Tsuzuki Asato is an ‘Angel of Death’ responsible for bringing relieve souls that don’t arrive the afterlife, or solving cases inspiring mysterious or unliscensed deaths. This leads to an titillating cast of characters, and a VERY inviting gape at some of the Japanese myths surrounding the afterlife, gods, etc. Not, I warn though, for the squeemish, or for those who have a predicament with guys with…eh…*questionable* relationships with one another. i.e. – LOTS of fangirl service and a number of situations provocative the main character and other (male) characters.

Buster Keaton wrote and directed most of his two and three-reelers with Eddie Cline, who also appears in several of them (as Edward F. Cline) . Keaton is considered one of the Sizable Three silent-era comedians, along with Harold Lloyd and Charles Chaplin.

Highlights of this profitable three DVD set:

“The General” is a cinematic classic– nothing less. This is a movie everyone should peek. It’s a titanic introduction to the peaceful film genre. Keaton’s unbelievable acrobatic skills, his monotonous aim, pantomimic ability and expressive mannerisms have never been save to better consume, or topped by anyone, anywhere.

“The Play House” is a most great short. In the situation of 20 minutes, Keaton manages to report 20 different roles: he’s the audience, actors, orchestra and a stagehand. A tour-de-force!

“Steamboat Bill Jr.” contains Keaton’s most uncertain stunt. A wall topples over and the stationary and accurate Buster is positioned precisely so that he passes harmlessly through an originate window, the wall landing on the ground around him. This was such a uncertain trick, half of the production crew walked off in articulate rather than be examine to Keaton possibly getting killed by this plummeting object.

“Parlor, Bedroom & Bath” is a pre-code comedy that showcases Keaton’s comedic talents in a speaking portion. Also in this film is Cliff Edwards, who was once known as Ukulele Ike. Edwards’ most noted role was the express of Jiminy Cricket in PINOCCHIO. His recording of “When You Wish Upon a Star” won an Academy Award in 1941.

In “Li’l Abner,” Keaton has a supporting role. In this one he’s a dumb ringer for Lonesome Polecat, the microscopic Indian who brews Kickapoo Joy Juice in an ample cast iron cauldron. The other actors here are also great look-alikes who bring to life their laughable strip characters. Although the script is runt, this is peaceful a fun movie.

This live performance (1985) from Vienna’s notorious Residence Opera House has a solid cast, except for the director. Araiza and Benackova have the appropriate lyric voices for Faust and Marguerite. Araiza performs a very sensitive and worshipful cavatina, “Salut! Demeure.” Benackova does her best to explain an innocent excitement upon viewing herself with a crown of jewels in the distinguished “Jewel Song,” but it seems out of status with her nun’s attire. (Yes, in Act II, she is packaged as a nun!) Raimondi has a collected and strong teach, even though he lacks the devilish and sarcastic coloring of the behind Nicolai Ghiaurov. The characterize (somewhat grainy), and the sound quality are well-behaved to the modern list of Faust DVD’s. For the most portion, the sets are impressive–but not necessarily appropriate–and rather somber. The opera opens and closes in Faust’s broad spy with a symbolic idea of the sky and higher realm. The opera often resembles a ballet as dancers appear as apparitions to accompany the vocalists.

In the notes that accompany the DVD, we learn that the director, Ken Russell, wanted to form the seduction of Marguerite, in his words, less “comical” and more “realistic” and “shimmering.” (It should be eminent that Russell’s reading, assuming he read Goethe’s first allotment, is at odds with most reviews of Faust.) To add “realism” to Faust’s conquest and Marguerite’s punishment, there are some symbolic sets, costumes, and scenes that will strike many viewers as rather bizarre and sometimes offensive. To prepare the viewer, here are a few examples of why this production was very controversial. Instead of an gorgeous vision of Marguerite in front of a spinning wheel, we peep a rather unalluring image of a woman sending a cryptic message by method of effect language–probably not the kind of image that would have prompted the aging Faust to trace a contract with the devil. In the distinguished and romantic garden scene, Marguerite appears fully dressed as a nun, and her garden is paved in stone rather than plants. Apparently, her religious habit is not very disconcerting to the arduous Faust because, after their duet, we recognize them rolling together on the pavement, in one of the strangest seduction scenes in the history of opera. Finally, Russell decides to focus on Marguerite’s punishment for murdering her illegitimate child rather than her pardon and redemption. Instead of angels bearing her spirit heavenward, we notice and hear the sound of a guillotine. In the closing scene, Faust is relieve in his recognize and seated in front of Marguerite’s casket. As a morbid reminder of their indiscretions, a headless corpse rises and falls inside the casket.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Gounod – Faust! Click Here

Symbolic sets, costumes, and scenes assist a very useful purpose when they elaborate and enhance the spirit of the narrative and nature of the characters. Unfortunately, Russell’s symbolism distorts what both Goethe and Gounod had in mind, and they probably would have strongly disapproved of Russell’s alterations to the theme and depiction of Marguerite. For example, both Goethe and Gounod focused on Marguerite’s redemption and not her punishment, and neither one of them would have pictured her as a nun in a bizarre seduction scene. Goethe once claimed that his nature was too conciliatory to effect a correct tragedy. The extinguish of the second portion reunites the lovers in heaven to the devil’s disappointment. Gounod has been criticized, often unfairly, for not following the classic poem more closely. In order to manufacture a well-liked and absorbing opera, Gounod did leave out sections of the chronicle, but he remained correct to the spirit of Goethe’s Faust. In addition to being a composer of operas and religious music, Gounod was a literary scholar who wrote reviews. No doubt there is an audience for Russell’s attempt to revise one of the greatest poetic masterpieces in literature–probably the same audience who would like to ogle Mephistopheles dressed as a priest and conducting the sacraments. However, more knowledgeable fans of the poem and opera are likely to net his revisions disconcerting and defective. This production is probably worth four stars if you are willing to overlook the director’s misconceived symbolism. Alas, it appears that Faust lovers will have to continue to wait for an outstanding production of Gounod’s large opera on DVD.

The distinguished ballet scene was omitted. They made Margeurite a nun which she never was, and it objective doesn’t work. Worst of all, they altered the unique ending which depicted forgiveness and salvation (visually and in words and music) into a visually faulty, plain scene totally inconsistent with the celestial music. Such changes to a masterpiece, whether it be a renowned opera, as here, or to a Rembrandt cannot be justified, whether under a banner of “creativity” or any other.

First off I impartial want to say the my son loves Pingu. The dilemma I have with this Cd is how poorly packaged this is…

No Menu

No Chapter selection.

It’s impossible to settle between eposodes and if you go past the last one it stops the DVD and you have to set aside up with the insensible FBI/Interpol warnings.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Meet Pingu! Click Here

Bottom line: I’d wait until a better edition comes out or initiate off with “Chillin’ with Pingu” (also sold on Amazon) which actually has a menu.

Note: We rented a DVD at Blockbuster called “Introducing Pengu” which was a better deal than this one (more episodes and an right menu) so hint hint Amazon – sell that version instead.

Shame on Hit Ebntertainment…

Being a penguin fanatic, my sister bought this DVD for me for Christmas. I wasn’t for obvious what to reflect of it originally, but came to really bask in the DVD after watching it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Meet Pingu! Click Here

Pingu is a young penguin and he and everything in his world are created through claymation (the type of animation responsible for WALLACE AND GROMIT, GUMBY, CHICKEN Bustle) . The stories on the DVD involve Pingu and his friends and family as they go about the daily tasks of their lives. Unlike most claymation shows, there is no literal dialogue: the creatures all protest a type of mumbling that is called Pengeese. There are six episodes on the DVD.

“Pingu Goes Fishing”–in this episode Pingu has his first encounter with a young seal named Robbie who becomes his best friend.

“Pingu Helps to Lisp the Mail”–in this episode Pingu helps his father impart the mail in their shrimp village.

“Pingu Plays Fish Tennis”–in this episode Pingu and Robbie are bored and raze up playing a game of fish tennis.

“Pingu Gets a Bike”–in this episode Pingu’s father runs over Pinga’s (Pingu’s slight sister) bike. She cries and cries and cries until Pingu gives her his bike. Friendly lesson in sharing.

“Pingu at the Nursery”–Pingu takes Pinga to school at the nursery.

“Pingu and the Organ Grinder”–the terrible Organ Grinder who lives on the outskirts of town is having a difficult time making a living. No one pays attention to him or his music. Pingu loves his music and decides to serve the Organ Grinder.

Overall, I found this DVD to be highly entertaing. The whole DVD is a small over 30 minutes and can be easily watched in one setting. My well-liked episode was “Pingu and the Organ Grinder”; I found it to be touching and reminded me of how grand I care for my grandparents. This is a gargantuan DVD to study with younger children and makes an marvelous gift for any penguin or claymation fans.

Here’s a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), old Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved… and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me bellow.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Up! Click Here

I view it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a shrinking young boy star-struck by a celebrated explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become rapidly friends, and articulate to one day recede to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls. After getting married, they grasp their dream home and fix it up, hoping to have it with children. Carl and Ellie’s life together from childhood through worn age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. The first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a overjoyed marriage, and you truly feel Carl’s harm when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.

When developers discontinuance in on Carl’s beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and fade to Paradise Falls. A primitive balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of shimmering balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a chubby, audacious kid trying to get a scouting badge.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Up! Click Here

After landing in Paradise Falls, the passe man and the microscopic boy are joined by a golden retriever named Dug who can talk with his collar, and a expansive rare bird that bonds with Russell (he names her “Kevin”) . Dug is priceless: spot-on for every dog that ever lived, including an obsession with squirrels. Through a series of terminate calls and adventures, the quartet vanquishes a villain, saving the day. And Russell earns his scouting badge.

In the process, Carl learns to let go of his dusky mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a truly magical thing happens. Before, Carl’s craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by exquisite hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole modern world.

Up is a deeply emotional film, beefy of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Catch another triumph for Pixar.

Someday, Pixar is going to do it — they’re going to execute an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster involving movie. But in the meantime, they’re peaceful putting out savory arresting movies like “Up,” which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety weak man. It’s a charming, fun shrimp adventure epic with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet itsy-bitsy record about loss and esteem.

As a child, the haunted Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared savor of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, fade into their “clubhouse” together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.

Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a true estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn’t going quietly — instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. But he accidentally takes an interested, naive Wilderness Explorer (a thinly-veiled Boy Scout) named Russell (Jordan Nagai) along for the trip. Unpleasant kid was unprejudiced trying to catch an “assisting the elderly” badge.

And the jungle dawdle to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a great emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious worn man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the used guy is very familiar to Carl — and to seize Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.

Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as approved as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty venerable coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can luxuriate in Carl’s admire for his lost wife, and his dreary realization that he’s clinging to the past.

In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they note all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing used together, and finally loss.

But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy reach to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of immense dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called Leer Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Frosty! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an conventional airship.

Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and clear to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is distinct to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special gape. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I appreciate you”) and act the blueprint dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.

The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to accept shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of irregular stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.

There are also a pair of adorable inviting shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to stutter potentially tainted baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.

“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously inspiring, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can bask in. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!

This movie is actually a filmed version of a play and this is determined in the viewing; the director doesn’t fabricate exercise of all the potential of the medium, it’s filmed all in one grasp (objective as a play goes from open to conclude in one go), and the scene transitions are abrupt and dreadful. That being said, this film deserves no other criticism; it is certainly the finest I’ve ever seen and, I would argue, a large movie in the English cinema. What makes it deserve such praise is that the acting is all very convincing and compelling, the costumes and staging are sublime and the script is, simply set, gleaming. The novel title of the work fuctions as an pleasurable summary: “The assasination and persecution of Jean-Paul Marat as performed by the inmates of the asylum at Charenton under the direction of the Marquis de Sade.” Residence in the Napoleonic era eighteen years after the French Revolution, the Marquis (imprisoned for both political and sex crimes) directs the mentally ill inmates in a stylized recreation of the slay of Jean-Paul Marat (a rabid Jacobin, confined to his bathtub by a skin disease, who wrote the most sanguinary Revolutionary propaganda) by Charlotte Corday (from a reliable background, but actually a partisan of the Girondin Revolutionaries who had been purged by Marat’s party) . This is a highly cerebral play and, although the scrip (a translation of Peter Wiess’ play) takes a very few liberties with the historical facts, a knowledge of the Revolution greatly helps in notion and appreciating this sometimes obscure movie. There are trusty sparkling pyrotechnics in the debates between Marat and de Sade, and the Marat’s monologues are filled with gorgeous revolutionary polemics. Corday is very well played, and her scenes are some of the most emotionally intense. The luminous script, which doesn’t shrink from tackiling tall Ideas, combined with the astronomical execution obtain this a safe movie. Or rather film.

This 1966 film depicts the Marquis de Sade’s imprisonment in a mental asylum and a play that he directs using the other inmates as actors. The sage of Sade was recently related in “Quills,” and that film is somewhat similar in tone, but not site. Hold it or not, the film is also a musical! The “play” within the movie chronicles events from the French Revolution pertaining to Marat, and is save on for the asylum’s leader and the local gentry. The local gentry are disquieted at times, and the asylum leader interrupts the play several times with interjections concerning the play’s radical ideas and how the gentry are depicted. As the play reaches its culmination, the inmates inevitably open to stage their fill revolution. The action is often confusing, but the emotions conveyed are so intense, that the film can be enjoyed on a visceral level.

The direction of this film is quite quick-witted, and it must have been radiant ghastly when it was released 36 years ago. The acting is also very intense and realistic. Glenda Jackson has her starring debut here and is quite interesting, considering that she’s playing a mental asylum inmate. The only quibble I have with the DVD is the awful sound quality. Even on DVD, the sound is muddled and the actor’s dialogue is often unintelligible, especially during the songs. Unfortunately, the DVD does not include captions/subtitles, which would have helped immensely (there are no other extras either) . A very worthwhile movie that could have been presented better on this DVD.
