Well, I got my copy a week early and all I can issue you is that it is the best shot and produced Macca DVD/video to date. The band is strong and does what they need to do. Those who saw the concerts left with a bit of the magic from those shows, and I consider they will all be thrilled with the DVD. The song choices are the best that have been released on video yet. You bag some of the very best Beatles stuff (we can argue forever on what was left out here) along with the best Wings and solo works. In the kill, you only have so great time, but you bag a substantial overview of an unbelievable career. Paul’s whisper and playing have never sounded better.

It was plan wintry to examine the sound check stuff with a very relaxed Paul on his Les Paul playing the mature Bo Diddley classic, “Bring It To Jerome.”

There is a touching tribute to John (Here Today) and George (Something solo on ukele) . George was an accomplished ukele player and Paul’s tribute is unusual and does not wallow in despair over the very heavy losses through the years.

All I can really say is that this DVD beats all the other McCartney concert DVD’s of the past.

The concert I went to was big. All of the reviewers of this DVD appear to be reviewing the concerts they attended. My argument is with the DVD version. This DVD is lousy. First of all the stage is too unlit. Edifying DVDs bathe the stage in lots and lots of light. Hard to contemplate the performers the contrivance the stage is lit. Second, powerful of it is grainy, as if the director was going for an arty achieve. And what is with the constant cuts, in performances, to adoring fans? Yes we esteem the music but really, Paul and the band should be the display – not the adoring fans. A minute bit is fair but shots of the fans seem to create up an bad lot of the display, and they withhold popping up when the main focus should be the music and the band. I belief I was watching a fan club function. And why the recurring shots from the succor of the hall? A DVD with recurring shots of the TV screens gradual the performers? And the halt ups of the players are rarely upright close-ups. Didn’t they have any hand held camera operators? It looks like all of the end ups are zooms from the aid or sides of the hall.

For gigantic DVD concerts, well lit, check out the Rolling Stones Bridges to Babylon, the All Star Tribute to Brian Wilson, Roger Waters in the Flesh Live, or Elton John One Night Only. These are splendid examples of how it should be done.

The whole thing looks like a partial upgrade from a home movie.

The music though …. the music rates 5 stars. I like this music.

However, the purpose of a DVD is to bring the sights and the music to you at home. It fails miserably on the “bring the sights” fraction of the equation, unless your significant interest is constant shots of fans.

A disappointment. I’ll turn off the TV and listen.

I first saw South Pacific when it was released in 1958 at the age of 10, and remember being totally overwhelmed by the orchestrations, performances and photography. Over the years I have regularly heard the film trashed by critics and many members of the public, so I was provocative to view how I would answer to it now when I recently bought the video. Well, maybe it’s unprejudiced me, but I found the film as thrilling and stunning as I did forty years ago. I agree with everyone else that it was a mistake to exercise those colored filters in many of the sequences, but the film unexcited packs a heck of an emotional whallop, and I consider along with The King and I stands out as the most successful of the Rogers and Hammerstein shows set aside on film. The weakest of the cast is John Kerr, who is somewhat wooden; however, Juanita Hall is fair as Bloody Mary (she will never be surpassed in the role she createwd on Braodway), Rossano Brazzi is thoroghly convincing as Emille DeBeque (even if he was dubbed by Giorgio Tozzi), and Mitzi Gaynor gives an unforgettable performance as Nelly Forbrush. Of all of the criticism one hears of South Pacific, to me the most puzzling is the bashing of Mitzi Gaynor, who to me is not only advantageous but perfection in the role. I realize a lot of this probably stems from enrage that Mary Martin didn’t gain the role and is basically sour grapes, but the fact is Ms. Martin was too venerable to be convincing in 1958. The scenes in which Ms. Gaynor struggles with her small-town prejudices are absorbing and very proper, and when Bloody Mary brings Liat to her to salvage Lieutenant Cable, who has been killed, it breaks one’s heart. Anyway, the movie smooth knocks me out, even if that makes me, as Nelly Forbrush calls herself, a “knucklehead.” The extraordinary photography, resplendent music, and theme of the need to triumph over bigotry which is collected so relevant even today, makes this film a 5-star winner in my book. As trite as it sounds, “They don’t manufacture ‘em like that anymore!”

This label unusual edition of SOUTH PACIFIC is a must for all fans of the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. Based on characters and segments from James Michener’s “Tales of the South Pacific”, the memoir takes plot on the islands during the tail-end of World War II. A magnificent young nurse from Arkansas, Ensign Nellie Forbush (Mitzi Gaynor), falls in treasure with a wealthy French plantation owner Emile de Becque (Rossano Brazzi) . Their relationship is tested when she discovers that he fathered two children with a now-dead Polynesian wife, and that he is wanted for the abolish of a man in France. As Nellie confronts her bear fears and prejudices, the dazzling Lt. Joe Cable (John Kerr) falls helplessly in treasure with Bali Ha’i island beauty Liat (France Nuyen) . Filling out the comedy in the story are Bloody Mary (Juanita Hall), the wheeler-dealer with a heart of pure gold; and Luther Billis (Ray Walston), the tattooed leader of the beach-bound troops.

This DVD has been available for a while in the UK and Australia, and now finally gets a US release this November. The double-disc site includes two versions of the film: the current theatrical slice, and the rarely-seen Roadshow version which runs for 20 minutes longer with material that was subsequently trimmed for the film’s general theatrical release. Audio commentary is provided by Ted Chapin and Gerard Alessandrini (current theatrical prick) ; and Richard Barrios (Roadshow version) .

Extra features will include the piquant “60 Minutes” describe by Diane Sawyer with James Michener returning to the islands and reuniting with people that served as the inspirations for characters in the book…including the sincere Bloody Mary. Vintage performances from the “General Foods” Rodgers & Hammerstein TV tribute (current Broadway leads Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza), two MovieTone news segments and the trailer.

This is a very moving film about the clash of two radically different cultures. The young Jesuit priest, Father LaForgue, although very rigid in his belief system, sincerely wants to help the Native Americans by bringing them the Truth. But his message of paradise has no meaning for the Alogonquins, Hurons, and other tribes that he comes into contact with. They cannot understand why he has no woman. They fear him as a demon because he reads from books and makes strange signs (of the cross). He, in turn, believes they are living in darkness and must be saved. He is fearful of the vast forests where the devil reigns. There is a great deal of complexity in the character of Chomina, the Algonquin leader who fears the Black Robe but who feels honor bound to assist him. Father LaForgue is a tragic figure, so lonely and confused in the vast expanses of ‘New France’. Why is he here, so far from his mother’s comfortable drawing rooms? What does he hope to accomplish? The film is beautifully shot on location. A warning to the faint-hearted: there are some gruesome scenes in the film. Black Robe is a moving, balanced film with a profound spirituality.

An outstanding look at what happens when cultures collide. “Black Robe” tells the story of a 17th century French Jesuit missionary sent to the Canadian wilds to proselytize among the Huron Indians. Unfolding artfully and slowly, the film explores both the questionning of and committment to his faith encountered by the priest as he gets to know his Indian guides, their culture, and their spiritual beliefs. In the film, the priest’s character is juxtaposed to his young apprentice who falls in love with the daughter of their Algonquin guide and comes to a deep understanding and appreciation of their culture. Far from romanticizing and idealizing it’s Native American characters, however, “Black Robe” presents them fully as rich, varied, multi-faceted individuals capable of pettiness, wisdom, loyalty, kindness, atrocity, humor, close-mindedness, and love. Likewise, the priest retains his committment to Roman Catholicism and his confusion over Native American spiritual beliefs, while coming to a profound love and respect for the individuals and the tribes he has come to serve. It is a truly remarkable film, magnificently photographed, with rich, memorable characters. It speaks clearly about the conflicting values and world views held by these two cultures without denegrating or idealizing either one. There is violence and sexual situations — similar to what you might expect in “Braveheart.” A great film!
