In 1966-67, with 100,000 meters of black-and-white film and freedom to shoot without a script, director Vilgot Sjoman created a motion picture so rangy and multilayered that it became two separate, overlapping movies released a year apart: I Am Curious Yellow and I Am Curious Blu. Those are the colors of the Swedish flag, and Sjoman’s film tapped into the political, social, and psychosexual condition of his nation on the eve of worldwide cultural revolution.

It also became a envelope-pushing event in the history of sex in the cinema. A feisty, rather zaftig actress-activist named Lena Nyman played a radical activist named Lena Nyman who, in between interviewing her fellow Swedes about everything from gender inequities to the morality of vacationing in Franco’s Spain, spent lots of raunchy time in bed (and elsewhere). The copious frontal nudity and a glimpse of oral-genital contact ensured an epic court battle in America, and I Am Curious Yellow became a must-see conversation piece.

Decades later, it all seems not only fresher than it did then but oddly tender, even sweet. Sjoman, 42 years old to Nyman’s 22, cast himself as her lover (which he was) as well as her director, and the film is occasionally “interrupted” by its own filming. Sjoman/”Sjoman” has to watch Lena/”Lena” doing some very intimate things with costar Borje Ahlstedt. Borje is playing a car salesman, but also playing “himself” as an actor sometimes intriguing against his director with “Lena”–not “Lena the activist” but “Lena the actress,” both of whom Lena the actress-for-real is playing. The Pirandellianism is witty, raw, and lingeringly ambiguous. And now DVD adds another layer if you happen to watch with the commentary track engaged and listen to the seventysomething Sjoman, still musing wryly on the radical fusion of film and life at whose creation he was present. –Richard T. At its core, Munich is a straightforward thriller. Based on the book Vengeance: The Tru Story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist Team by George Jonas, it’s built on a relatively stock movie premise, the revenge plot: innocent people are killed, the bad guys got away with it, and someone has to make them pay. But director Steven Spielberg uses that as a starting point to delve into complex ethical qustions about the cyclic nature of revenge and the moral price of violence. The movie starts with a rush. The opening portrays the kidnapping and murder of Israeli athletes by PLO terrorists at the 1972 Olympics with scenes as heart-stopping and terrifying as the best of any horror movie. After the tragic incident is over and several of the terrorists have gone free, the Israeli government of Golda Meir recruits Avner (Eric Bana) to lead a team of paid-off-the-book agents to hunt down those responsible throughout Europe, and eliminate them one-by-one (in reality, there were several teams). It’s physically and emotionally messy work, and conflicts between Avner and his team’s handler, Ephraim (Geoffrey Rush), over information Avner doesn’t want to provide only make things harder. Soon the work starts to take its toll on Avner, and the deeper moral qustions of right and wrong come into play, especially as it becomes clear that Avner is being hunted in return, and that his family’s safety may be in jeopardy.

By all rights, Munich should be an unqualified success–it has gripping subject matter relevant to current events; it was co-written by one of America’s greatest living playwrights (Tony Kushner, Angels in America) and an accomplished screenwriter (Eric Roth); it stars an appealing and likeable actor in Eric Bana; and it was helmed by Steven Spielberg, of all people. While it certainly is a great movie, it falls just short of the immense heights such talent should propel it to. This is du more to some qustionable plot devices than anything else (such as the contrived use of a family of French informants to locate the terrorists). But while certain aspects ring hollow, the movie as a whole is a profound accomplishment, despite being only “inspired by tru events,” and not factually based on them. From the ferocious beginning to the unforgettable closing shot, Munich works on a visceral level while making a poignant plea for peace, and issuing an unmistakable warning about the destructive cycle of terror and revenge. As one of the characters intones, “There is no peace at the end of this.” –Daniel Vancini

Julie Harris brings depth and grace to one of history’s most maligned first ladies in The Last of Mrs. Lincoln. This production, part of the Broadway Theater Archive series, has been adapted for television, but not intrusively. Television allows for cuts and multiple viewing angles, but the feel of a play is very much here. The scenario follows Mary Todd Lincoln and the ill-fated Lincoln family from the year of the president’s assassination through the end of Mary’s life. The occasional bet-you-didn’t-know historical anecdote is thrown in to the dialogu, but otherwise Mrs. Lincoln works well as a play and never feels like classroom fare. Harris reveals Lincoln’s stubbornness and tunnel vision where her family is concerned but also lends her sympathy and humor. Though clearly a difficult woman to live with, she is hardly the vicious harridan who has come down through the historical rumor mill. Harris is bolstered by an excellent supporting cast, including Michael Christopher as the much put-upon Robert Lincoln, a young Robby Benson as Tad Lincoln, and Patrick Duffy as Mrs. Lincoln’s favorite nephew, Lewis. –Ali Davis

When Odette (Gaby Hoffman) gets kicked out of her coed school for plotting to lose her virginity (All I Wanna Do is set in 1963), her parents send her to Miss Godard’s Preparatory School, an all-girls school that tries to instill independence in its students. Her roommates turn out to be the school’s troublemakers–Verena (Kirsten Dunst), Tinka (Monica Keena), and their friends Tweety (Heather Matarazzo) and Momo (Merritt Weaver). Though Odette initially resists (not because she wants to stick to the rules, but because she hates the whole school so much she won’t even join the rebels), she gradually becomes part of the rambunctious circle. Du to financial trouble, the school’s trustees decide to merge with a nearby boys’ academy, despite the furious protests of Miss Godard’s headmistress (Lynn Redgrave). Verena echoes the headmistress’s sentiments and launches an offensive of pranks to discredit the visiting boys, even though the struggle splits apart her own social group. Though All I Wanna Do is being marketed as a goofy romp, it walks a line between a coming-of-age comedy and a young feminist manifesto (as one might imagine from the movie’s previous title, Strike!). It’s a tricky combination, but writer-director Sarah Kernochan succeeds–she also wrote Impromptu, which similarly mixed tart yet sympathetic humor with subtle political commentary. The direction is tight and the script allows its heroines a surprising complexity. The cast of rising young stars, also featuring Rachael Leigh Cook, is superb throughout.
