The Korean feature Hammerboy (2003) was adapted from a popular manhwa (graphic novel) by Youngman Hur. In 2112, Mangchi, a pint-sized hero who’s more enthusiastic than bright, lives in a setting that recalls Waterworld: a small colony on an island formed by two ruined skyscrapers. His grandfather forges the hammers Mangchi loves to play with, and instructs him in the “Great Echo,” a way of focusing all the body’s energy into a yell that serves as a weapon. When Princess Poplar crash lands near the colony, Mangchi has to help her against the power-hungry minister Moonk, who’s trying to seize the throne.

The filmmakers cram far too much story into 75 minutes, leaving the characters underdeveloped and big chunks of the plot unresolved and unexplained. Like other recent Korean features, Hammerboy borrows heavily from Japanese animation, especially the films of Hayao Miyazaki. Director Taekun An lifts elements from Castle in the Sky, Porco Rosso, and Kiki’s Delivery Service, but it’s all pastiche. Hammerboy is no deeper than an episode of Digimon. Director Tsui Hark serves up one elaborate and satisfying high-tech heist sequnce, and a lot of strenuous physical comedy, the best of it featuring Sylvia Chang, a wonderfully animated performer. When Tsui cuts loose during the action scenes, the energy level goes through the roof; no filmmaker in Hong Kong, or just about anywhere else, sets a more infectious breakneck pace. Tsunami and Takamiya meet in a dul that ends before it really begins. Director Akiyuki Shimbo favors still images with the action occurring on the soundtrack, producing a striking but static feature that resembles a manga shot panel by panel, rather than a conventional animated film. The sixth embodiment of Doctor Who, Colin Baker, faces his long-running foes the Daleks in this two-part story from 1985. Revelation has the Doctor and companion Peri (Nicola Bryant) traveling to the planet Necros, where a plan to pay respects to a late friend uncovers a scheme by Dalek scientist Davros (Terry Malloy, the only actor to play the role more than once) to use the bodies of the recently deceased to build a new and terrible Dalek army. The only Dalek story to be produced during the Colin Baker years, Revelation doesn’t quite rise to the level of classic Dalek episodes from the past (like Genesis of the Daleks, with Tom Baker), but Who fans will still find much excitement and intrigu to enjoy here. The story is probably better known for its historical impact as the last Doctor Who serial to be produced before the BBC imposed an 18-month hiatus on the series in 1985. Extras include commentary by Bryant, Malloy, writer/script editor Eric Saward, and director Graeme Harper, as well as the featurette “Revelation Exhumed,” which examines the story through interviews with the cast and crew (including comedian Alexei Sayle, who contributes an amusing performance to the story as a DJ), though Baker is noticeably absent. There’s also an optional video track that allows viewers to watch the story with improved visual effects, as well as an isolated score audio option, and a selection of deleted scenes. –Paul Gaita
