A Cinderella story from the mean streets of Kingston, Jamaica, the alternately comic and gritty Dancehall QUn is an intriguingly dark crowd pleaser. Marcia (Audrey Reid) is a single mom and street vendor barely scraping by even with a financial assist from the seemingly avuncular Larry (Carl Davis), a gun-toting strongman with a twisted desire for Marcia’s teenage daughter. Complicating things is Priest (Paul Campbell), a murderous hood who killed Marcia’s friend and now is terrorizing the defenseless woman. Facing three big problems–Larry, Priest, and a lack of money—Marcia arrives at an inspired solution: develop an alter ego, a dancing celebrity called the Mystery Lady who can compete in a cash-prize contest and pit both of the men against one another. Which is exactly what she does, and it’s great fun watching Marcia instigate her complicated plan with a little help from sympathetic friends. Colorful, rowdy, funny, and dangerous, Dancehall QUn is a clever and ceaselessy energetic movie steeped in Kingston street life and the desire to keep body and soul together at home. When Odette (Gaby Hoffman) gets kicked out of her coed school for plotting to lose her virginity (All I Wanna Do is set in 1963), her parents send her to Miss Godard’s Preparatory School, an all-girls school that tries to instill independence in its students. Her roommates turn out to be the school’s troublemakers–Verena (Kirsten Dunst), Tinka (Monica Keena), and their friends Tweety (Heather Matarazzo) and Momo (Merritt Weaver). Though Odette initially resists (not because she wants to stick to the rules, but because she hates the whole school so much she won’t even join the rebels), she gradually becomes part of the rambunctious circle. Du to financial trouble, the school’s trustees decide to merge with a nearby boys’ academy, despite the furious protests of Miss Godard’s headmistress (Lynn Redgrave). Verena echoes the headmistress’s sentiments and launches an offensive of pranks to discredit the visiting boys, even though the struggle splits apart her own social group. Though All I Wanna Do is being marketed as a goofy romp, it walks a line between a coming-of-age comedy and a young feminist manifesto (as one might imagine from the movie’s previous title, Strike!). It’s a tricky combination, but writer-director Sarah Kernochan succeeds–she also wrote Impromptu, which similarly mixed tart yet sympathetic humor with subtle political commentary. The direction is tight and the script allows its heroines a surprising complexity. The cast of rising young stars, also featuring Rachael Leigh Cook, is superb throughout. This generic sex comedy–about a guy who can’t decide whether or not to marry his girlfriend because he’s still obsessed with a girl he saw in an airport when he was a teenager–really has only one thing to recommend it: Ryan Reynolds (Coming Soon, Van Wilder). Reynolds plays the main character’s horndog friend who becomes convinced he’s gay, and while much of his material is of dubious taste and quality, Reynolds has a mixture of ironic detachment and actor commitment that makes the most of his role. Everyone else–Jerry O’Connell (as the obsessed guy), Bridgette L. Wilson (as his understandably frustrated girlfriend), Ron Livingston, Bill Bellamy, and Alyssa Milano–have their moments, but the script doesn’t offer them much to work with. When it isn’t drowning in cliches about men and women, it’s trying way too hard to be “over the top.” –Bret Fetzer

Love Stinks
In Love Stinks, Seth (French Stewart from TV’s 3rd Rock from the Sun), a sitcom writer-producer, meets Chelsea (Bridgette Wilson, Billy Madison) at his best friend’s wedding. He’s immediately smitten by her blonde babeness; she’s attracted to his income and single status. For the next 45 minutes she tries to get him to commit though a combination of skimpy outfits and wild mood swings. When she finally realizes he’s not going to, she turns into a vengeful harpy and tries to make his life hell. This might be funny if you believe that women are manipulative, money hungry, marriage-fixated psychotics–but maybe not. The standard of wit is best expressed in the line, “Drop the probe and step away from my ass,” declared by Seth as he’s about to receive an unrequsted colonic in a spa. It’s always wise to be wary of comedies with a comedy writer as the main character, especially when the movie is written and directed by a comedy writer. Writer-director Jeff Franklin previously made two TV movies starring the Olsen Twins; this may have been his attempt to exorcise some relationship gone awry. Love Stinks also features Bill Bellamy (Love Jones, Def Jam’s How to Be a Player) and supermodel Tyra Banks. –Bret Fetzer
