The documentary details the rise of 12 midlevel names (Kurt Angle is the only huge figure profiled) and the strange, often brutal roads they took to make it as pro wrestlers. Besides Angle, William Regal, Edge and Christian, Lita, Spike Dudley, Mighty Molly, the Hardy Boyz, Bradshaw, Stacy Keibler, and Billy Gunn tell their stories (often punctuated by comments from their parents or siblings), and all are fascinating vignettes. Say what you want about pro wrestling, but the drive and determination displayed by these people is not only impressive, but uplifting. –Dave McCoy

The tale is a spinoff of the famous Nutcracker ballet: a young girl falls in love with her new toy nutcracker and is whisked away to Christmas land. Also along for the ride are various nuts (a saucy Brazilian, a baby peanut, a wise walnut… you get the idea) and various vegetables to defend Christmas against the Rat King. The film has no dazzle or inspired humor–just a dozen bad puns, three Peabo Bryson songs, and a handful of catch phrases. Of course the look is quite colorful, but it proves that the brains behind other computer-animated tales such as Toy Story and VeggieTales aren’t just designers; they’re storytellers first. Jim Belushi, Phyllis Diller, and Cheech Marin provide voices. Heaven forbid what the second straight-to- video computer animated holiday special from a major studio will bring. –Doug Thomas

The film doesn’t pretend to offer solutions, nor does it dwell on the problem with numbing insistence. Rather, this taut, well-acted film takes the viewer into a world often hidden in plain sight–a world where options seem nonexistent for youth conditioned to have little or no expectation beyond a probable early death. Lee and Price are deadly serious in handling this volatile subject (which incorporates racism, powerless law enforcement, and political indifference), but Clockers is also blessed with humor, insight, and humanity. It’s one of Lee’s most confidently directed films, signaling a creative maturity that Lee continud to develop throughout the 1990s. –Jeff Shannon

At its core, Stomp the Yard is a romantic drama disguised as a dance film. Or is it the other way around? DJ (Columbus Short) is a troubled teen from Los Angeles who gets a chance for a better life when he is admitted into Atlanta’s privileged Truth University. Just when he thought he had escaped a life of gangs, DJ finds himself in the middle of a “war” between two upper-crust fraternities where stepping (a popular dance form) is their weapon of choice. When DJ realizes the coed he falls for is the girlfriend of the school’s champion stepper, he joins the rival fraternity to try to show her–and himself–that he’s as good as anyone else there. Stomp the Yard is not an original film. Add some drums and you’ve got Drumline. Change some of the characters around and you’ve got Save the Last Dance. What sets the movie apart is the stepping. The precision involved at this level is impressively complicated and Short–a dancer and choreographer–is beautifully expressive both as an actor and a dancer. Sure the plot is predictable and hokey at times. But Short and Meagan Good (as his crush April) have wonderful chemistry together, and the supporting cast–including Harry J. Lennix as DJ’s no-nonsense uncle–are delightful to watch. –Jae-Ha Kim
