Episode Guide:

(Hide Test) The Flagstones: Admittedly, I’ve never seen the hide test (discovered in 1993) and cannot even vouch for it’s inclusion in the DVD set-one can only hope.

(14) The Prowler: Insecure by a neighborhood prowler, Betty and Wilma choose to lift Judo lessons, despite Fred’s objections.

At this writing, I couldn’t voice you about the extra’s included in this volume. However, as I lift, The Flintstones’ 3rd season (1962-63) is perhaps their most transitional, as Fred (Alan Reed) and Wilma (Jean Vanderpyl) give birth to a shrimp cavegirl named Pebbles (also voiced by Vanderpyl, she would originate her debut towards the demolish of season 3 in Dress Rehearsal (aka The Blessed Event), at the ruin of the show; her 1st words are “Abba dabba goo goo!”) . Many of the cartoons featured Wilma expecting, with the announcement of Wilma’s pregnancy at the ruin of one particular episode appropriately entitled The Surprise (ironically, this episode had more to deal with Barney’s nephew Marblehead, whom Fred grows to cherish, though he won’t admit it! Listen for Marblehead’s imitation of Uncle Barney’s hiccupy laugh) . Barney (Mel Blanc) and Betty (Bea Benederet) are the godparents. Also, the familiar theme “Meet the Flintstones” also makes it grand debut in this season (it was featured in background music in Seasons 1 and 2) .

Highlights include a performance by Rock Roll, who looks and sings a exiguous like Elvis (”There’s a town I know where the hipsters go called Bedrock, twitch, twitch!”), Wilma and Betty enter a Rock Toasties contest and regain a whisk to Hawaii (Wilma saves Fred’s life by punching out a ferocious dinosaur chasing him, “Beat it, buster!”), Barney plans a surprise birthday party for Fred and spends most of the episode trying to gather a snappily asleep Fred home to the party, Fred takes ballet lessons to improve his bowling, Barney saves a baby but Fred unintentionally takes the credit, Fred goes help to high school for his diploma in order to avoid termination from Mr. Slate and becomes a football hero (”Flintstone! Flintstone! Rah, rah, rah!”), Wilma rents the house to 3 Swedish musicians (”Duh, he is Olie, I am Schven!”), Barney becomes invisible thanks to one of Fred’s wacky inventions, Fred tries hard to pick up along with his depraved mother-in-law during a visit (”I fancy my mudderinlaw!” he reminds himself, but gets his revenge by taking her on a long taxiride in disguise), Fred hires an Italian maid named Lolabrickida (who is an estimable cook and a lot nicer than Grandma Dynamite and the bossy nurse hired after Pebbles’ birth, but has zero tolerance for abominable singing!), Fred and Barney go skiing in the mountains and unwittingly prevent a jewelheist (”Psst! Slalom, Shorty, SLALOM!”), Barney reluctantly agrees to masquerade at Shrimp Tex to tag Fred’s rich Uncle Tex (voiced by Hal Smith, “Wahoooooo!”), Arnold the Paperboy cons Fred into paying more and later Wilma insists Fred contemplate a quacky doctor and for Wilma’s birthday, Fred buys her a dodo bird named Doosey, who snitches to Wilma and Betty about the boys’ plans to go to a Water Buffalo convention in Frantic City without them (”Convey! Frantic City, Frantic City, stammer, whistle!”) . Also, Barney tricks Fred into thinking Pebbles can talk (”Do thum backfwips for me, Daddy, or I’ll cwyyyy!”) and the Flintstones go out of their humble abode to be arrive a crowd of rich snobs (”Everybody into the pyool!”) .

If you liked Seasons 1 and 2, set aside your money for this one! That’ll be 2 rocks, please!

And a rainy day. I was surprised at how remarkable I enjoyed the film.

Tom (Dempsey) and Hannah (Monaghan) met at a Cornell costume bash 10 years before when a drunken Tom, dressed as President Clinton, stumbled into a dorm room and a girl’s bed thinking he’d found “Monica”. Turned out he’d gotten the irascible girl. “Monica” was Hannah’s inebriated roomie.

They were friends from that moment, sharing Sundays, confidences, and desserts. Tom didn’t know how mighty they shared til Hannah headed for Scotland and stayed gone six weeks. He was ready to propose when she came help, but she returned with a man, Colin (McKidd) .

Hannah and Colin were going to be wed in Scotland in two weeks and Hannah couldn’t believe of anyone she wanted to be her Made of Honor more than her longtime best friend. Tom reluctantly current, secretly agreeing to become the best maid of honor and shatter the wedding.

What happens had me laughing until tears streamed down my face. I needed the rupture and “Made” defintely offered it. Tom hosting the wedding shower was a screamer–particularly when the jealous female friend who wanted to be the “MOH” location him up with a sex toy salesperson and Hannah’s sweet Grandma ended up with a necklace of ‘thunderbeads.’ Then, of course, there was the Highland Games with Tom and Colin tacitly competing for Hannah’s hand, Tom dressed in a mini kilt. (Nope, he wasn’t dressed regimental–darn!)

Director Sydney Pollack showed up in a rare movie role as Tom’s oft-wed Dad. The prenup agreement with Wife 5 (or was it 6, Dad can’t remember) had me roaring. The car with the intended bride had to literally go around the block at the church to iron out last-minute details.

Plus, the scenery from Scotland was astonishing. I recognized some places I’d been a few years before–and definitely remembered the flock of Hieland Coos stopping traffic on mainstreet.

The music was superior, a mix of contemporary plus some feeble Scottish tunes. I recognize there’s no soundtrack available. I hope there will be one. It was a graceful decent collection.

The film’s what you’d question and yet, it’s level-headed animated. And, sometimes you unprejudiced need something that’s a gimme when it’s a rainy day and a cheap laugh will rob a few clouds.

Rebecca Kyle, May 2008

What do you collect when you copy “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” engage out all of the joy and originality, add in senseless sex jokes, crass tale telling, unoriginal region points and outrageous shoddy filming as well as a thrown-together-cast of actors who seem to not speak where they are? Well, you accept “Made of Honor.”

Not only did this movie let my wife and me down, it offended, it ridiculed and it made us feel like we were foolish as a public, that we would lap up whatever drivel they threw together.

I’m sorry to say that Dempsey’s charm couldn’t put this relate atomize of a movie. Did I mention how unfunny and unoriginal it was?

This aloof British film starring two of Britain’s most acclaimed actresses, Dames Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, is unabashedly a vehicle for these two leading ladies. Janet (Smith) and Ursula (Dench) are two unmarried sisters living on the flit. When one morning after a storm they contemplate an unconscious young man (Daniel Bruhl) on the rocky shore, their daily rhythms change as each woman develops a crush on the helpless man. Each vies for his complete attention. When Janet is able to finally communicate with Andrea in German (he is Polish), Ursula becomes consumed with jealousy and compensates by pampering him. Both, however, are pushed aside as it turns out that Andrea is a virtuoso violinist (music played by Joshua Bell), and the entire town in drawn to him. Even worse for the sisters, a glorious visitor, Olga, discovers him as well, drawing him away from Janet and Ursula, into her bear world.

Judi Dench is given more to work with than her co-star, and so comes across as the more complicated woman, but Maggie Smith turns in a comely, reserved performance as the more hard-edged sister. Daniel Bruhl is a dinky awkward in his role; while Natascha McElrone turn in a more memorable performance, though hardly as commanding as Dench and Smith. The cinematography lends affection to the English countryside and cruise, and it highlights the isolation of the puny town.

This film is slow-moving and carefully articulated, without powerful happening beyond what is revealed in the actresses’ faces. Without Dench and Smith, it would have no appeal, and so should be seen more for the two stars than for the film itself. 3+ stars.

English actor Charles Dance (’Last Action Hero’) made his debut as director in ‘Ladies in Lavender’ based on a short fable by William J. Lock. The film features capable veterans like Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Miriam Margolyes, David Warner, plus Natascha McElhone (’Ronin’), and Daniel Bruhl (’Goodbye Lenin”) .

The myth, station in 1936 in a seaside village in Cornwall, is a simple one. A young pleasing man named Andrea (Bruhl) is found on the shore, uncounscious, with his ankle broken. Andrea, who cannot relate English, is nursed by two feeble ladies of the village, Ursula (Dench) and Janet (Smith), and soon he recovers his health, picking up some English words while in bed. Also, Andrea starts to live with the spinsters (and the housemaid Margolyes who teaches him how to peel the ‘potatoes’), and brightens the life of the ladies, especially that of Ursula, to whom Janet refers as very ‘naive.’

Later, Andrea turns out a gifted violinist, and Olga, young traveller from the city, also finds his talent (Olga speaks fluent German) . And a bit incredibly, I believe, but Olga happens to be a sister of one eminent violist, who happens to be in London objective for one day. And Olga says this is a astronomical chance that he cannot lose.

The worn and implausible yarn is helped by the presence of the two enormous actors Dench and Smith. It is their acting, or subtle expressions of bid and face that really sigh the chronicle, and Charles Dance should be very thankful for their reliable jobs (I conception, actually, his direction is objective so-so, with too many unnecessary plain motions and even an embarrasing ‘dream sequence’ of Ursula that had almost killed the film) .

The film’s strength lies in the veterans’ acting, particularly that of Dench, whose character Ursula is the most memorable one. It is definite that she is in fancy, and equally obvious that she knows she is not allowed to hiss her feelings even before Janet, who somehow senses the truths slack the embarrassed expressions of Ursula. At the same time, however, this could be the weakest (or most wonderful) share of the film — of course, musty ladies topple in esteem, and why not? — but Judi Dench and Daniel Bruhl? And in the current, Ursula is in her 40s while Judi Dench was born in 1934.

Another dilemma is (so I found), Daniel Bruhl, or his character Andrea, who lacks the mystery, or the dim side, which he should have, if he really comes from where he claims (remember, it’s 1936, only three years before WW2) . Andrea’s character needs more complexity. After all, who is he? Why wants to go to America? He doesn’t talk about them — that’s fair — but no one asks (except David Warner’s doctor), which is too uncommon.

‘Ladies in Lavender’ is a righteous film about the two ladies in title, and the acting from the important players is grand. Spy for Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, and you will be greatly moved by them, or their characters.

For those of you that will or want to shriek about how technically unsuitable this movie is, remember this movie was made and released in 1944. That means it was made and released during the Second World War. The U.S. government was loathed to confirm the fact that a sea battle even took spot arrive Midway Island, let alone boom what our force make-up was or what our or what it believed the enemies right battle looses were.

Additionally, in 1944 it was detached unknown for positive what was results of the Torpedo Bombers attack. It wasn’t until after the war that it was learned what actually happened. Although it is upright that the Torpedo Bombers didn’t accumulate hits on the Japanese Carriers, the precise point is that the TBF Squadrons took nearly 75% casualties in this battle, that if it wasn’t for those mettlesome men who gave their lives up at very-low altitude, the Dive Bombers coming in from 12 to 15,000 feet above the torpedo attacks may not have got the chance they needed to earn through the Japanese air mask. Once again, it’s also factual that in 1944 none of this information was either known or if suspected, any where arrive releasable to the population as factual.

Heck, one of our submarines reported sinking one of the 4 Japanese carriers and was actually credited with the sinking. That was until post war interrogations of the Japanese sailors that fought at Midway revealed they saw submarine torpedos hit a carrier during the air attacks and atomize up, without detonating.

By the draw, the character portrayed by Dana Andrews was apt to be worrying about Japanese radar. Because even though the Japanese didn’t have radar on their ships at Midway, the United States Navy idea they might have radar and trained its Carrier Wings to ask its consume. When you gain proper down to it, this film is as technically moral as the US Navy in 1944 could be.

I saw `A Cruise and a Prayer` at least 30 times on board US Navy ships and on TV since 1946. I bought the VHS copy I’m reviewing now about two years ago. If you like classic war movies made during WWll, this is one of the best. It`s a handsome film, with grand acting.

During W.W.II the Hollywood movie studios, as a share of the war inconvenience, created many war films that were of a genre loosely known as “propaganda films”. These films generally presented the movie goer with the same three basic points of view: 1. Why we need to fight W.W.II 2. We not only need to fight, but we need to fight as a team. 3. The going is tough now, but if we persist we will find. Many people (me included) believe these movies presented the best of American values. —— “A Soar and a Prayer” is an righteous example of this type of movie. It follows the exploits of “Carrier X” and her crew through the desperate opening months of W.W.II when Japan, following the US Pearl Harbor misfortune, was seeking to raze the remnants of the US Navy by piquant them in a decisive broad scale sea battle, and grasp them as a Pacific threat. We learn, though the death of several U.S. aviators, the reasons why they are willing to die for their country (why we fight) . The cocky young “movie star” pilot (”Oscar”) who thinks mainly of himself, at the beginning of the movie, is forced, by the raze of the movie, to produce a decision that weighs his hold life and that of his crew against the lives of the men of “Carrier X” (sacrifice and teamwork) . Finally we are shown that if we persist in our fair cause we can, through sacrifice and teamwork, succeed against overwhelming odds (defeat of a gigantic Japanese task force by a smaller American force) . Though “Carrier X” is never identified, it is rumored that it is loosely based on the exploits of the USS Yorktown. Although the accuracy of everything from aircraft types old-fashioned, to wound inflicted by and upon the enemy, and the accuracy and order of specific events can be questioned, the one thing cannot is that, in general, this state actually happened (The Battle of Midway) . —- Finally, when considering your purchasing dollar, this is an respectable period film that belongs in your library, it can be viewed and reviewed, and detached remain modern and piquant. Four Stars!

Around the World in 80 Days is available for streaming or downloading.

Click Here to Stream or Download Around the World in 80 Days

First of all, “Around the World in 80 Days” is one of the best of the 1950-1960’s astronomical epics. It may not have the character depth of Giant or the scale of The Ten Commandments, but it’s mild one heck of a fun movie.

Mike Todd station out to produce 3 hours of crowd-pleasing entertainment and he reached his goal, ten-fold (literally… the $6,000,000 film earned over 4 times its cost at the box office) . The cast is unbelievable (it’s definately Cantinflas’ exhibit, though) and the Oscar winning cinematography is breathtaking. Also, one of the best musical scores (also an Oscar winner) and a witty screenplay (Oscar winner) compose it a staunch joy to witness.

Sadly, for the last 18 years, the only version on home video has been a pan & scan one. “80 Days” was shot in the Todd-AO 70mm format, so the crisp, ultra-detailed, and wide image is totally mangled in that format. It doesn’t relieve that the P&S tape also primitive a mono track rather than the beefy stereophonic surround sound that Todd-AO (and even many general release 35mm prints) offered.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Around the World in 80 Days! Click Here

Warner Home Video’s DVD of the film is nothing short of a triumph. The film’s unusual negative has been in dreadful condition since the 1950’s (not Warner’s fault, mind you), thus making a watchable print is more or less impossible. Thankfully, Warner has remastered “80 Days” from scratch. The result is a magnificent 2.20:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, with the Todd-AO mix adapted to Dolby Digital 5.1 (448 kbs, too!) While the image occasionally has gooey splices and some specks on the image, the film has a level of crispness and color vibrancy that rivals 1940’s Technicolor films. The 5.1 track is extraordinary and keeps a lot of the directional sound of 6-track magnetic sound from 70mm presentation.

What is really improbable is that Warner managed to originate one of the most perfect digital transfers of a film, ever. Not one hint of edge enhancement pops up, no pixelation, no macroblocking. While the film source isn’t perfect, Warner didn’t add any sort of imperfections when adapting the 65mm film to NTSC video. The switch to 448 kbs (Warner usually uses a lower bitrate for 5.1 audio) gives the audio a obvious warmth that is in line with the ultra-high fidelity of 6-track mag sound.

The extras are large, too. The Robert Osborne intros, outtakes, Brian Sibley commentary, new “Bound to the Moon” short, and roadshow program book (on DVD-ROM) makes this an beneficial presentation of a Best Narrate Oscar winner.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Around the World in 80 Days! Click Here

Whether you’re collecting the Best Represent winners, a fan of the classic 1950’s epics, or honest looking for a fun movie to observe, Around the World in 80 Days is worth a capture. “80 Days” hasn’t lost its luster due to age, it’s because of terrible presentation. Now that Warner Bros. has released the film in widescreen, people can now glimpse what is one of the most underrated and neglected films.

This Todd-AO wide-wide-wide conceal production earned many accolades when it was released and, although it may be a bit tame by today’s standards, it should be placed on a DVD in its current WIDESCREEN Todd-AO format to gather the elephantine achieve of its scenic and laughable wonders. David Niven, a very young and elegant Shirley MacLaine, Robert Newton and Cantinflas head a Expansive cast of movie stars playing all sorts of cameo surprise roles throughout, many of whom will probably not be recognized by today’s generation but who should be remembered nevertheless. The mammoth Victor Young come by is fair and Sizable names explain up all through this movie: Buster Keaton, Marlene Dietrich, Frank Sinatra, Cesar Romero, and over 40 other stars light up this adventure, which really works best in its widescreen presentation. Why this grand family film has not been given the DVD treatment is a mystery to me. Let’s hope this error in judgment will be corrected soon and a pristine widescreen DVD will be forthcoming of this truly savory movie.

Orphans of the Storm This is D.W. Griffith’s last great success, an epic melodrama from 1922 about two orphaned girls (real-life sisters Lillian and Dorothy Gish) raised in the same house and tragically separated during the French Revolution’s infamous reign of terror. While this is no Birth of a Nation or Intolerance, it still reveals Griffith’s inimitable talent for spectacle and intimacy. Not surprisingly, it works best when focusing on the plight of the two sisters: Lillian is a peasant who cares for the blind Dorothy, a product of the deposed aristocracy. Orphans of the Storm is a film about intriguing pairings. Mingling with the upper class to help find Dorothy, Lillian falls in love with the handsome and compassionate Joseph Schildkraut (best known as Otto Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank) and beguiles the influntial Danton. Dorothy, meanwhile, is held captive by a family of gypsies, and is fought over by two brothers. Despite the lavish sets and Lillian’s stirring performance, the love stories and political tumult don’t quite mesh. But there are two magnificent moments emblematic of Griffith’s dual talents: When Lillian recognizes Dorothy’s plaintive voice outside her window and comes to her rescu, and the thrilling climax when Danton rescus Lillian from the guillotine. –Bill Desowitz Lillian Gish Dorothy Gish Lillian Gish, Dorothy Gish, Joseph Schildkraut, Frank Losee, Katherine Emmet Watch Orphans of the Storm Online! 6/10/2003 Watch Online Orphans of the Storm
