The key things to know about the DVD are:

1) The colors jump off the hide, it is a huge transfer

Buy,Download, Or Stream Batman: The Movie! Click Here

2) The featurette with Adam West (Batman) and Burt Ward (Robin) is profitable, though they hide a lot of the same ground in the commentary

3) The Batmobile feature is very cool

4) The commentary is awesome. Adam and Burt have a vast chemistry and really seem to care for both the movie and the reveal. Their tongues are firmly in their cheeks druing the commentary (Adam West’s views on Bruce Wayne alone are worth the note of admission), but you will learn about the production and such secrets as:

Why did ABC ride down the Batcave so speedy after cancellation?

What did Burt Ward really believe about the BatCycle?
How and why did Lee Meriweather win to play Catwoman?
Why did Adam and Burt have to utilize two hours each week getting oxygen at the Fox infirmary?
The team at Fox had a lot of esteem for this movie and it shows. Take this DVD and secure Fox to release some series episodes with Adam, Burt, Julie Newmar (Catwoman) and Frank Gorshin (Riddler) doing commentary!

Who knew that the campy 1960s’ hold on the shadowy superhero Batman would age so well? 39 years later, “Batman: The Movie” serene is wholly palatable even for the most adrent Batman fan.

The site of the film is paperthin. Batman (Adam West) and his sidekick, Robin (Burt Ward), are out to thwart the four most risky villians in Gotham: Catwoman (Lee Meriwehter), The Joker (Cesar Romero), The Penguin (Burgess Meredith) and The Riddler (Frank Gorshin, who recently left us, sadly) from taking over Gotham. To lure Batman into a trap, they kidnap Batman’s secret identity, Bruce Wayne. This is more or less all the dwelling there is. There’s also somehing about destroying people with a dehyrdator, but other than that, there’s no steady space. And that’s the film’s charm.

It’s a huge allotment of 1960s’ nostalgia. The “holy (insert random word or phrase here), Batman” schtick is aloof hilarious, and the cast is clearly enjoying themselves. The extras for the dvd are surpisingly scrumptious. The commentary is awesome and the other extras verbalize, but it’s the movie that is really worth watching.

I saw this movie when it was in the theater in 1989. I liked it so much that I had to buy it on VHS. Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor star as two innocent guys-one deaf, one blind, and both are on the run for a murder they didn’t commit! Add the wonderful talents of Joan Severance and Kevin Spacey, and you have the makings of one well scripted and very funny movie! Oh, and let’s not forget Alan North as the police chief. The film’s plot makes for a cops and robbers type of suspense. Of all of Gene Wilder’s and Richard Pryor’s works, “See No Evil, Hear No Evil” is as equally funny as “Silver Streak”, which makes it a must buy!

I’ve seen this film five times since it was first released.

As I grow in age and watch this movie, I feel almost robbed that I wasn’t either around, or old enough to appreciate the pure genius that both Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor held.

This film is about a blind man (played wonderfully by Richard Pryor) who’s down on his luck and in need of a job. Luckily for him, a deaf newsstand owner (played with all the comic gusto he can muster by Gene Wilder) happens to be hiring.

Buy,Download, Or Stream See No Evil, Hear No Evil! Click Here

Pryor owes a bookie big time, and when the bookie comes looking for him at his new place of employment, chaos ensues because he’s murdered. Wally (Pryor) doesn’t see it, and Dave (Wilder) doesn’t hear it. The murderers get away and Dave and Wally are suspected. Their misson: clear their name.

Craziness and hilarity ensue.

Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor are two highly underrated talents before the camera. The adventures that these two poor characters go through is something that a wide audience can enjoy. The use of two ailments such as deafness and blindness is not exploited or made fun of, just used for great comic timing and situations.

If you’re a fan of great comedy, and pretty good action that features two comic geniuses, I highly suggest this film.

“Man On Fire” is an intense action thriller that takes you through hell and back. This is not a “happy” movie, and it’s not pretty. It’s extremely violent at times and the storyline is a reflection of a parent’s worst nightmare–the kidnapping and possible murder of their child. While it can be over-stylish at times with fancy editing and camera work, it proves to be a more than effective thriller.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Man on Fire! Click Here

John Creasy used to work for the CIA, but now he’s an alcoholic who doesn’t think there’s much to live for. This is due to the terrible things he has done in his line of work (we never know exactly what he did, but there are more than enough hints). Starting a new life in Mexico, his best friend finds him a job as a bodyguard to a nine-year-old girl since the family is worried about all of the kidnappings that have taken place in Mexico. The girl, Pita, takes a liking to Creasy right away, but he doesn’t allow her in and treats her as nothing more than a job. Amazingly, he starts to get attached to Pita and finds a new reason to live. Not only is he her bodyguard, but he is almost like a second father to her.

Things drastically change when Pita gets kidnapped. Creasy does his best to take out the kidnappers when it happens, but is outnumbered and has been shot multiple times. While recovering in the hospital, he learns that the ransom for little Pita has gone sour and that her captors have most likely executed her. This sets off a rage inside Creasy like he has never experienced before. He checks himself out of the hospital and wages his own war against everybody who was involved in the kidnapping/murder of Pita. And he vows to kill every single one of them.

Tony Scott directs this intense and emotional thriller. He does a great job with the material and he knows how to get the performances that he wants from his actors. My complaint is that he goes a little overboard with the fancy camera work and editing at times, but that is something that can be overlooked. Denzel Washington gives one of his most powerful performances since “Training Day.” He really makes you feel for his character, and his absolute hatred towards the people involved with the horrible kidnapping is done in an extremely realistic and convincing way. Dakota Fanning does a great job in her role of “Pita” and does well by playing opposite of Denzel. And, we cannot forget the great Christopher Walken who also does a superb job on his part. He plays it perfectly and does not try to steal any scenes from Washington.

It must be said, this is a vicious movie. It’s not for people with weak stomachs. There is one scene in particular that makes the ear-cutting scene in “Reservoir Dogs” look like absolutely nothing. Denzel’s character doesn’t only want to murder the bad guys… he wants to make them suffer in the most horrific ways, and he does that many times. It’s not a happy or cute movie. It will disgust a lot of people, so it’s not for everyone. Make sure you keep that in mind if you decide to rent this. Other than the option to watch the movie in DTS and two commentary tracks, the DVD has no special features. It looks and sounds great. It would’ve been nice if they did more with the DVD in the special features department, though.

“Man On Fire” is a powerful and unforgiving thrill ride that will keep your heart pumping and your forehead sweating. Other than some of the flashy and fast editing/camera work, the movie really works. Again, this is not for anybody with weak stomachs. It is very disturbing and unsettling. If you’re looking for a powerful thriller with a lot of “bang” and real emotion, then this is something to check out. As dark and brutal as this movie is, I really enjoyed watching this. -Michael Crane

This is a dark, clever and very surreal kind of movie. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I got the chance to see a preview of it at a UK movie theatre this week.

It starts off as it means to go on, with the kidnapping of a teenage boy, his torture by his kidnappers, the payment of the ransom by his family and his release, a broken shell of the happy go lucky youth he used to be.

It is after this introduction we meet Creasy, played to perfection by the actor Denzel Washington. He is the tormented killer-come-bodyguard who is slowly drinking himself to death, a man who has forgotten how to live for as his friend Rayburn, the glorious Christopher Walken points out to a Police Officer, “Creasy is a man who has made an art out of killing…”

Dakota Fanning gives an excellent performance as Pita, the half Mexican, half American child who gets under Creasy’s skin and into his heart and teaches him that it is okay to care and love another person.

When Pita is kidnapped and then murdered (or so Creasy thinks), a rage is born inside of Creasy that will only be quenched by the total annihilation of all those involved in her abduction.

With the help of a crusading reporter Mariana, the wonderful Rachel Ticotin and the cynical Manzano, a delicious Giancarlo Giannini, Creasy sets about enacting his vow and he does it in style!

This is not violence for the sake of violence, and though there is plenty of blood and guts flying, what surprised me was how well it was done! I am really quite squeamish and though there were a couple of times when I went, “OH YUCK” it certainly wasn’t as bad I expected it to be and it fitted in TOTALLY with the plot.

Mickey Rourke plays the charming but sleazy lawyer Jordan and I was most impressed by Radha Mitchell who played Lisa, Pitas’ mother, she reminded me of Tea Leoni, but with more class whilst Marc Anthony gives a solid performance as Sammy, Pita’s weak but loving father and last but not least, Angelina Peláez who only has a bit part as the nun Sister Anna but who is able to see in to Creasy’s soul and know he is a fallen angel.

“Man on Fire” is not an easy film to get your head around, the plot is quite complex, the cinematography is utterly surreal in parts, flickering in an out as we are treated to images both real and imagined and in the background there is the ever menacing present of corrupt public officials and a man know only as the “The voice” who has kept Mexico in thrall with his constant murderous kidnappings for profit.

The director Tony Scott has done a great job; I love this film with all its twists and turns, its many complex characters, the good but tormented soul, (Creasy), the innocent (the child Pita) the bad, (Fuentes a corrupt cop) the ugly (Manzano the good cop), the weak (Sammy Pita’s father), the sleaze ball (Jordan the lawyer) the beautiful, (Mariana the crusading reporter), the tragic (Lisa, Pita’s mother), the stupid, (Bruno the rather stupid Rave Master) and the downright evil (the Voice).

The film score is also a crackingly good example of how you can put music in a film and make it part of the whole visual experience.

In fact the music was SO good in my opinion I am breaking one of my rules, I’m buying the CD! I only do buy a soundtrack when I really LOVE the music; this is one of those rare occasions!

The whole film is quality on celluloid, and all the actors/actresses are perfect to the parts.

A film worthy of many Oscar nominations in my humble opinion but then quality has never been an Oscar trademark so I am not holding my breath in that department!

The title of my review reflects my sons’ first viewing of the DVD. We had spent the day playing bocce (check out my review of the Halex Classic Series Bocce Set) at a neighborhood park. It was almost 4 p.m. and our boys were getting tired. Too late for a nap and too early for dinner, I instructed them to get up on the couch while I loaded the DVD.

Just like the books, each story has a message. This DVD has six episodes:

At last! After purchasing the 1st season on iTunes, I’ve patiently been waiting for them to release the 2nd season of this wonderfully creative and pleasantly funny series. But for some reason, they’ve jumped around and have decided to start selling the fifth season.

No matter! Amazon has come to the rescue buy not only providing me the 2nd season, but also with DVD extras including a Cheese music video, a gallery of imaginary friends, and show promos. And at $5 less than what the other seasons have been selling for on iTunes.

The great episodes in this season:

“Partying is Such Sweet Soriee” – 5/5 – A personal favorite of mine, since it’s the first episode of “Foster’s” I ever saw. When Madam Foster and Frankie decide to go out one night, Bloo decides to throw a wild house party.

“The Big Lablooski” – 3/5 – Bloo, Mac and the gang join Madam Foster’s bowling team. Not one of my all-time favorites, but it has its moments, like Bloo’s desperate attempts at winning a paddleball from a claw machine.

“Where There’s a Wilt There’s a Way/Everyone Knows it’s Bendy” – 4/5 – A two-part episode. First there’s poor Wilt. He can’t say no to anyone, no matter how much of an inconvenience it is for him. And then, when a new guy, Bendy, comes to the house, he starts causing all kinds of problems. When Bloo decides to expose him for the troublemaker he is, he leaves quite a trail of destruction behind him.

“Sight For Sore Eyes/Bloo’s Brothers” – 4/5 – Another two parter. In the first segment, Ivan, a seeing-eye friend, has been separated from his kid. When Bloo and Mac decide to help him, they end up getting separated, as well. Next, when Mac takes Bloo to school for Show and Tell, Bloo wows his classmates. So much in fact, that all the kids go home and make their own, somewhat flawed version of our hero. When the copies get returned to the house, Mac can’t tell which Bloo is his Bloo.

“Cookie Dough” – 3/5 – I can’t really remember too much about this episode, since I haven’t seen it in a while. I do know that Bloo is hilarious as a money-grubbing, slave-driving, entrepreneur.

“Frankie, My Dear” – 4/5 – When Bloo and Mac both develop crushes on Frankie, they resort to any means necessary to keep her away from other guys. This episode features the first appearance of Orlando Bloo.

“Mac Daddy” 5/5 – Who doesn’t already know what this episode is about? The premiere episode of Cheese, that weird, annoying friend that suddenly shows up in Mac’s bed. Great episode, especially since it shows Bloo caring about someone other than himself.

Squeakerboxxx” – 4/5 – After a day at the arcade, the gand decides to put all their tickets together for a better surprise. They end up selecting `Harry Elefante’ (loved this!). Too bad Bloo breaks the toy the first time he plays with it, and must work desperately to win more tickets and get another prize before the other’s realize it.

“Beat With a Schtick” – 3/5 – Bloo, being Bloo, manages to offend a rather large new friend, who challenges him to a fight at 4 o’clock. It doesn’t help that everyone else in the house is looking forward to Bloo’s challenge and is taking bets against him. A cute episode, but they’ve produced better.

“The Sweet Stench of Success” – 4/5 – After appearing in an `Adopt a Friend’ spot on the news, Bloo becomes the mascot for DEO, a deodorant brand. Unfortunately for our dear friend, his new manager isn’t that nice of a guy.

“Bye Bye Nerdy”- 4/5 – After seeing Mac doing homework during recess, Bloo is convinced that Mac is a nerd. Taking it upon himself to make his friend cooler, Bloo turns Mac into a walking ad for 1987. A great episode! I loved the 80’s jokes.

“Bloo Done It” – 5/5 – When Uncle Pockets, a beloved professional friend, returns to the house, Bloo is determined to find dirt on the guy. Using the house newspaper and his ace reporting skills, Bloo discovers a horrible secret! As a student journalist, this episode really left me laughing. Bloo is quite possibly the best reporter ever. Not an ethical one, but still…

–Frankie: “Sounds to me like someone’s jealous!”

–Bloo: “Not jealous, journalis…t.”

“My So-Called Wife” – 3/5 – While Mr. Herriman and Coco try to impress an eccentric billionaire in order to get funds for the house, Frankie and Mac try to teach Bloo the fine art of sarcasm. They don’t fare well…

Great show, great characters, great storylines!! I can’t wait for the 3rd season and the introduction of Goo!

Wow, I love this show! I was among the first to get Season 1, and now I’m so excited about Season 2! The show can be picked up at any time, but in Season 1, we last saw Blooregard, called Bloo for short, causing all sorts of ruckus with his new friends Wilt, Eduardo and Coco, who are also imaginary. Mac still visits him every day and usually gets dragged unwillingly into the turmoil. And they all continue to have some of the greatest and most hilarious adventures together! Their friendships continue to strengthen, and we get to know some of the other characters, particularly Madame F.’s sweet granddaughter Frankie.

It didn’t come with a cardboard slipcover like Season 1 did. I personally see the slipcover as a sign of class and quality, so this might be a bit of a downside. I also haven’t noticed any little surprise features you have to search for (many times called “Easter Eggs” because you have to “hunt” for them) which is also a bit of a downside because they were fun to look for, find, and watch. They seem to have been replaced by small appearances of Cheese before episodes start. But overall, the DVD and its case are excellent.

As for the episodes, they’re all great this season! Well, except maybe one IMHO. And they are——

-Disk One-

*The Big Lablooski*

*Where There’s a Wilt There’s a Way / Everyone Knows It’s Bendy*

*Partying is such Sweet Soiree*

*Sight For Sore Eyes / Bloo’s Brothers*

*Cookie Dough*

*Frankie My Dear*

*Mac Daddy* With special commentary by Cheese

-Disk Two-

*Squeakerboxxx*

*Beat With A Schtick*

*Sweet Stench Of Success*

*Bye Bye Nerdy*

*Bloo Done It*

*My So-Called Wife*

Special features (on Disk 2) include—-

*Show promos* -I don’t ever recall seeing them aired on TV, but they’re basically ads for the show. Each features a different imaginary friend, including Bloo and Cheese, being video taped by Frankie, saying why they’d make a great imaginary friend to anyone who might like to adopt them. Some of them are pretty funny!

*An All New “Gallery of Friends”* -A look at the lesser known friends in the house

*End of Episode Gags* -The fun little scenes CN sometimes shows during the credits at the end of the episode

*”Cheesequest”* -A special “music video” featuring Cheese. This is actually a fun “short” rather than a music video. It has been aired on Cartoon Network a number of times already. It features Cheese imagining himself being sucked into a Nintendo-style video game, and hops, runs, flies and swims his way through, collecting points, all while fun video game music plays in the background.

*A Commentary on “Mac Daddy” by Cheese* -It turned out better than I expected, but I have to say I liked the commentary from “Store Wars” on the Season 1 DVD better. It will depend how you look at it as to if you’ll like it or not. Also depends on how much you like the character Cheese. Basically, Cheese comments on things on the screen like you

might expect a 3 year old to. If you think you’d find the comments of a 3 year old amusing while watching TV, you might find the commentary cute. If you’d find it annoying, you might not like the commentary so much. I personally found it cute, but it just wasn’t as funny as the commentary on Season 1.

And now, I look forward to Season 3! Bring it ON!!! =)

This year 2004 marks the first appearance of this great Judy Garland film (one of her last for MGM) on DVD. This film is based upon an earlier James Stewart film THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER and was recently remade as YOU’VE GOT MAIL. This new restored print is an improvement over the previous VHS release. The picture has been cleaned up and colors look brighter and bolder than ever before, as we expect with 3-strip Technicolor, though there are still a FEW age related artifacts present, but I am forgiving enough to look beyond this. In general, the new transfer is beautiful. The soundtrack sounds equally as impressive and has been cleaned up very nicely for this release.

Buy,Download, Or Stream In the Good Old Summertime! Click Here

Included on the disc are trailers for this film, THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER, and YOU’VE GOT MAIL. I really don’t know why the latter was included here, it lends nothing whatsoever to this release, and practically everyone in the country has seen it by now. There are no other “extras” to speak of. We wish that the deleted musical number, “Last Night When We Were Young,” sung by Judy Garland, had been included as a bonus on this disc. Both the footage and soundtrack for this number survive, and it was included in the Outtakes section of the fourth disc of the new That’s Entertainment 4-disc boxed set, released this past October. Why wasn’t it included here?

On the whole, this is a very commendable release from Warner Home Video, but if you still have the VHS tape there’s no real special reason to run out and buy the DVD.

Look for an 18 month old Liza Minnelli during the closing scenes, making her film debut.

Despite this charming film’s misleading title the majority of the story takes place in winter in the lead up to the Christmas season. It does however feature one of Judy Garland’s best later performances made in an all to rare trauma free moment in the late 1940’s for this legendary actress/singer when her health problems were affecting her ability to perform before the camera. Amazingly none of that is evident in “In the Good Old Summertime”, which finds her delivering a wonderfully controlled and at times wistful performance as a young employee of a music store in turn of the century Chicago who is having a romantic letter correspondance with a penpal who addresses himself simply as “dear friend”. Given its setting of a music shop “In the Good Old Summertime”, also offers Judy Garland a number of opportunities to present some fine musical interludes in her unique style.

It was a stroke of genius by MGM to decide to remake as a musical it’s earlier 1940 classic “The Shop Around the Corner” which starred James Stewart and another highly strung female performer in Margaret Sullavan. The results here are almost as effective as in the earlier film and Garland and Van Johnson make a delightful screen team. Based on the play “The Shop Around the Corner “, by Miklos Laszlo, the action this time has been moved from present day Budapest to turn of the century Chicago. Indeed this beautiful film bares a strong resemblance to Garland’s earlier classic “Meet Me in St. Louis”,and here the atmosphere is just as rich where the action centres around Oberkugen’s Music Store run by the memorable Otto Oberkugan (S.Z.Sakall), and his colourful group of employees in the store. Chief among them is Andrew Larkin (Van Johnson) who is a promising store clerk. Andrew however has a very prickly relationship with new employee Veronica Fisher (Garland)and both seem to always find something to disagree about. However what both dont realise is that the romances they are respectively enjoying via the mail out of work hours and which have progressed from “intellectual topics” to real love, are actually with each other! As the pen pal letter exchange deepens into love it is agreed that the two will meet. Andrew however sees Veronica already waiting in the restaurant and in his disappointment decides not to go in. Thinking about it longer and realising Veronica is his pen pal Andrew decides to give her a hard time about it and in a funny situation enters the restaurant and engages her in conversation much to Veronica’s consternation as she believes her “date”, will be due to turn up at any minute. Back at the store however things slowly begin to thaw between the two and when Andrew gets into deep trouble with Mr. Oberkugan for lending his prize violin to friend Louise (Marcia Van Dyke), for an audition he finds himself fired. The staff rally around him and its up to Otto’s long suffering secretary Nellie (Spring Byington)and Veronica to make him see the error of his ways. Otto relents for his behaviour and Andrew is made the new manager however Veronica decides she must be the one to leave and its only during a romantic interlude alone in the darkened shop on Christmas Eve that Andrew reveals his real love for her. Veronica also confesses her deep love for her former antagonist and the scene cuts away to the couple in a warm summer setting happily married and with a beautiful young two year old daughter (Liza Minneli).

“In The Good Old Summertime”, boasts many memorable musical numbers including the title song, “I Don’t Care”, “Put Your Arms Around Me Honey”, the comical “Play The Barbershop Chord”, and my personal favourite “Merry Christmas”. In all of these numbers apart from her beautiful singing style Judy Garland proves what an exceptional talent she was in comedy, pantomine and more energic pieces such as the barbershop number. Here is a talented actress in the full bloom of her capabilities who was unfortunately just about to exit the musical movie stage for quite some time. The supporting cast is exceptional with such fine comic talents as S.Z. Sakall and Spring Byington providing the top level support that they delivered in film after film in this period. Some rarities also pop up in “In The Good Old Summertime”, as we see veteran Buster Keaton play Otto’s brow beaten nephew to fine effect in his last MGM appearance and in the final scene reality and movie fantasy cross as Judy Garland’s real life daughter Liza Minnelli plays her and Johnson’s movie child in the last scene. Silent star Anna Q. Nilsson also has a small part as a woman buying one of the infuriating harps that reoccur in the story. MGM talent is abundantly on show in all departments here. The director Robert Z. Leonard who helmed the classic “Maytime”, for MGM, was only brought in after Garland nixed plans by the studio to give the assignment to her husband Vincente Minnelli as the pair were having difficulties at the time. The choreography is top rate and was handled by Robert Alton who was responsible for the innovative dance numbers in Garland’s previous film “Easter Parade”. Cedric Gibbons’ fine work in set design also deserves mention for giving the film its beautiful appearance and period flavour.

After this effort Judy Garland sadly went into a steep decline health wise and after completing only one more film “Summer Stock”, and being released from an aborted attempt to film “Royal Wedding “, with Fred Astaire her MGM contract was terminated. None of this sadness is evident in “In The Good Old Summertime”, thankfully and what we have here is a movie with gorgeous technicolour, many fine musical numbers delivered by Garland and a funny, and touching story set against a beautiful “MGM”, Christmas. Enjoy Judy Garland at the top of her talents in MGM’s “In The Good Old Summertime”.
