New Tricks is the best British cop exhibit since the legendry ‘Sweeney’. Like that gargantuan note what Modern Tricks has, but most British Cop shows lack is humour. This is not to say that is it is either a comedy or a ‘light’ detective series in the manner of say Pie in the Sky. The crimes in Current Tricks are genuine, violent often messy.

The belief is not modern, three retired detectives are called wait on to see at unsolved cases. The premise being that as feeble coppers they will be aware of the police procedures at the time when the crimes were carried out. The first Jack Halford (James Bolam) was the most senior and the most level headed even though he spends most evenings talking to his insensible wife who is buried in his assist garden. Jack has a violent and brutal side which from time to time slips out. He does however appear to have the respect of everyone who knew him as a serving police officer.

The second is Gerry Standing ( Dennis Waterman) . We come by the impression that Jerry was not above taking the unique bribe from criminals but as he tells his boss ‘Sandra I’m a awful boy not a bastard’. He has a number of ex wives and host of children all of whom are girls. Collectively he calls them ‘The Covern.’ Of the three he is the one who refuses to grow outmoded. The third, Brian Lane (Alun Armstrong) . Brain suffers from mental health problems and is a recovering alcoholic. He also has an encyclopedic knowledge of criminal cases and various police officers hence his knickname og ‘Memory Lane’. Alone of the three he has a wife (Susan Jameson) who struggles to cope with his bizzare behavour.

The three are managed by Sandra Pullman (Amanda Redmond) who is the only serving police officer in the team. She is torn between defending her team from those higher up and frustration at the weak school antics of the three, such as secretly taping suspects, this is defended by Gerry who points out he is no longer a copper and only the police are bared from secretly tapping suspects.

Each of the five is perfectly played. Class drama, well written undemanding but does not treat you as an idiot.

UCOS – The Unsolved Crime and Initiate Case Squad is a rag label, elder bunch of ex-cops who are assembled by the recently demoted DS Pullman, played by Amanda Redman. She had a bust go awful where she accidentally shot a dog, and suddenly she finds herself leading this team of cops whose best years are far gradual them. All of her 3 re-hires left the police for various reasons and each has their beget section of personal and emotional issues they are dealing with. For Pullman, she is constantly trying to balance her career and finding the time to continually hit the dating scene in her 40’s. Handling the stubborn and erratic personalities of her recent team is another challenge.

Jack Halford (played by James Bolam) is the only member who left the police force on amicable terms, having retired as a D.C. Superintendent. He is forever insecure by the hit and race accident that claimed his wife. He seems to be the oldest, but also the clearest thinker of the squad.

Brian Lane (played by Alun Armstrong) is an ex Detective Inspector who was sacked for having someone die while in his custody, which he strongly felt was not his fault. He’s sort of a pill popping, memory machine with OCD who memorized everyone’s resume who has ever worked at Scotland Yard. Also, if you ask him what he was doing on July 19th, 1978, he’ll remember.

My current of the bunch, and what drew me to accept this prove in the first spot is the star of numerous current UK shows over the years, including the highly accepted Sweeney and Minder series, Dennis Waterman. It seems he always plays a ladies’ man in every series, and this one is no exception. You will usually secure him hitting on his boss, being pursued by ex-flames, or eyeing the multitude of women he encounters during his cases.

Waterman’s character Gerry Standing, although no longer performing his legendary fisticuffs as he did in Minder and Sweeney, level-headed manages to pull some punches with his keen tongue and wit. I was almost ready to write the series off after the pilot, but I’m satisfied I didn’t.

One other graceful character is PC Clark, played by Chike Okonkwo. In this first series, he is the rude on the totem pole, young police constable, who really offsets all the older characters. He was always keen to wait on out and offer his young viewpoint and detective skills to the team. I feel this will be a small negative not seeing him reappear in later shows, as his character does not return for series 2. A minor setback to an otherwise strong and inspiring British present.

Hats off to Ted Turner’s crew and their partners at Warner Home Video for a simply handsome DVD presentation of THE HARVEY GIRLS. The film looks sumptuous. A thrilling example of Technicolor at its most heavenly. Although THE HARVEY GIRLS is a thoroughly delicious entertainment, there isn’t worthy substance to the spot. It seems to hardly matter, as the film’s major virtues are its large acquire by Johnny Mercer and Harry Warren, first-rate performances from a enormous cast, and of course, the peerless Judy Garland.

If anyone else had played the lead in this record, it would have been long forgotten. This is Judy’s expose, all the draw, and everything about it is designed to exhibit off her colossal talents.

MARCH OF THE DOAGIES and its reprise and MY INTUITION are the three that were filmed, and they are included on this DVD, looking like they were filmed yesterday (actually they notice TOO expedient to have been filmed in this day and age) . The one unused song that was recorded but not filmed called HAYRIDE is among the more than 20 pre-recording sessions included on the DVD’s “Mutter Song Convey”. Hats off to Warner and Turner for a radiant job well done, a Stout improvement from the once-impressive laserdisc release, which is now unwatchable in comparison to this DVD. Add to this the VERY reasonable impress of this movie, and it can’t be beat. Now the immense question: “When will Warner give us MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, EASTER PARADE and the rest of the golden Garland catalog? ” Let’s hope it’s soon. If this DVD is any indication of what those will be like, we are in for a treat.

One of the most lavish of 40s MGM musicals, THE HARVEY GIRLS really shows off Judy Garland’s worthy comedy skills, which she rarely got powerful of a chance to work with, and also shows her off at her absolute most unearthly beauty. I don’t want to effect a bigger deal out of this movie than it deserves. It’s not a world-changer and the ending is a bit predictable, but it is a fantastic and charming coming of age memoir and an impartial peep at small-town America. And cycling and Italians play central roles — a plus for an American cyclist living in Italy, like me.

But having an affinity for things Italian or for bike racing is not essential in order to delight in this 25-year-old classic. What is vital is an appreciation for microscopic things and memories about the mysterious period between adolescence and adulthood. If that describes you, then chances are you’ll delight in this touching film.

Amid the praise I should say that the DVD package is only average: the unusual trailer and teaser are there, but it would have been nice to have some commentary from director Peter Yates, some of the actors, or from critics who were fans of the film. A “Making of Breaking Away” mini feature would have also been a welcome addition.

One note: Breaking Away is a very American film, and so I’m not so positive how great of it will hit home with foreign viewers.

It’s about time they released this Masterpiece on DVD. In 1979, I was a 19 year old-fashioned boy. My MAMA had unbiased near home crying from the movie theatre, having seen this FILM. This is the third box state of the modern Transformers series, and the third one I have purchased. Very jubilant with it.

This is, of course, for the second half of Season 2. I’d actually forgotten how great several of these episodes are until watching them again. Tons of original characters expose up, the plotlines regain more varied, and there is action at every turn.

There are a mountainous many animation mistakes (voices out of the evil mouths, Autobots appearing with Decepticons, erroneous coloring, etc) but each and every one of these was note originally, and I remember them well upon seeing them again.

The restoration process did another dazzling job this time, though a few episodes have a enormous amount of dirt and dust on the film. This is probably due to the sorry plot of storage they had been subjected to over the years, as nobody expected that this series would be as lasting as it has turned out to be.

Keep in mind that the episodes are aired in Production Order, which is not neccessarily the same order they were aired in. This causes the Combaticons, for example, to appear in an episode before the episode where they are created is shown. It also sees several episodes air inbetween two episodes that are a continuation of each other. A minor thing, but enough to be eminent.

We mild need more special features. At least the interviews this time were with people who worked on the classic series, but I’d peaceful like to witness commercials for the used toys and perhaps scenes that got lop from episodes due to time constraints. Maybe even character profiles would be nice, and assume up limited disc station as well.

Overall, I loved this station, unprejudiced as I have with the other ones. Some large stuff in this one, reminding me of how I got so into this stuff when it was unique. This is lightyears better than ANY Transformers stuff that has followed it, even to the novel day series.

I notify Season 3 will follow with a status or two, but they feature the post-movie characters, which lose a lot of the charm that the fresh series has with Optimus Prime and Megatron’s almost respectful arch rivalry, and Starscream’s desire to overthrow Megatron and acquire power of his gain. But it will unexcited be a welcome edition, and allow Transformers fans to actually hold the entire US series when all is said and done.

Thanks again, Rhino, for bringing one of my common things from my youth encourage to life yet again.

The second half of The Transformers’ second season is probably the oddest stretch of episodes of the entire series. From the environmentally themed “The Golden Lagoon” to space-faring episodes like “Child’s Play” and the episodes with the gestalts (or combiners, if you will), there’s a lot of variety here.

The episodes are again restored in magnificent fashion, although there’s a few more moments in this area (as opposed to the last) where Rhino had to borrow from the broadcast masters due to re-takes. The commercial bumpers are now the “factual” Season 2 ones featuring newer characters like Cosmos and Thrust. The sound is also re-done like the other two sets, and is again reliable.

The Special Features, which consist of interviews with writer/associate producer/story editor Flint Dille and writer Buzz Dixon, are stout, and both certainly deliniate the series’ shift from the lighter episodes of Season 1 to the darker, more veteran fare of Season 3, while providing further insight about how cartoons were made during the ’80s, and how Sunbow helped to change that for the better.

Without doubt, this dwelling is worth every penny, and Rhino should definitely reflect releasing all of the Sunbow series (TF, G.I. Joe, Jem, The Inhumanoids, The Visionaries, and so on) on DVD ASAP.

I highly recommend this movie if you relish the MGM musicals or if you like Fred Astaire. Fred may not do a lot of dancing in this one but it’s peaceful a expansive film. He turns gritty and aloof keeps that John Denver appeal that we all grew up with. While this movie was released 20 years ago on CBS, it withstands those two decades as first-rate entertainment. He only sings one song but it is share of the movie’s status and not a solo cutaway.

Get it while you can, it probably will be a shrimp release and slay up on ebay at some point.

I eagerly awaited delivery of this newly released DVD. It arrived in yesterday’s mail and I watched it last night. I was truly surprised with John’s performance. Admittedly, he was not a vast actor, but a substantially honorable one. Of his films that I’ve seen, this was his best. The casting is superb; the acting well directed with gorgeous performances all around. The scenery is handsome and John sings and plays. A perfect evening of entertainment.

I can’t quite agree with the editorial review, which indicated that this might be the one Astaire-Rogers musical to examine, if you could perceive only one. This lags very, very slightly late TOP HAT and THE Delighted DIVORCEE, in my book, though I nevertheless assume it one of the very greatest musicals ever made. Another film, FOLLOW THE Snappily, features dance numbers that match any of these three, but suffers from a very veteran script and lags when Fred and Ginger aren’t dancing. SWING TIME is also is distress by the presence of George Metaxa as Ricardo Romero, and by his implausibly like a flash reconciliation to his being jilted at the ruin of the film.

My reason for rating it very slightly unhurried the other two films is the slightly weaker supporting cast and the fact that the humor is a tad less funny. The dance numbers, however, are unbelievable, with at least two of them belonging in the Fred and Ginger Hall of Fame for their finest moments dancing together. These two numbers are the marvelously comical “Retract Yourself Up” and the marvelously dramatic “Never Gonna Dance.” Luckily, this isn’t the extent of the musical’s treasures. There are two other gargantuan dance numbers and two genuine songs that do not feature any dancing. The latter includes Fred’s first-rate homage to Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, “Bojangles of Harlem,” which Fred does in blackface and which fair might be the only non-demeaning spend of blackface in a 1930s film. Not only is it not demeaning, it is a considerable homage to the man regarded by his peers as the finest tap dancer of the early 20th century. Fred and Ginger also earn the “Waltz in Swing Time.” The two songs are among the greatest pure songs appearing in any of Fred and Ginger’s films. “The Method You Gaze Tonight” (which won the Oscar for Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields that year) features Fred playing the piano (yes, he really did his hold playing) and singing while Ginger shampoos her hair (originally they were going to have her cleaning an oven, coming out mesmerized by Fred’s singing, covered in grease, but it was decided the notice didn’t carry out the desired carry out) . And later Fred and Ginger scream perhaps their greatest humorous song, “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off.”

As obliging as all the musical numbers are, however, the high point of the movie is the utterly extraordinary “Never Gonna Dance,” in which Fred declares that if she leaves him to marry someone else, he will never dance again. The number is incredibly mighty with Fred first singing his intentions, and then luring Ginger into one last dance together. The number was exceptionally difficult to film, owing to a double staircase on each side of the spot. The two had to dance upon it to time their arrival at the same exact moment. But for buy after purchase, they kept arriving at slightly different moments. Unfortunately, Ginger’s shoes were a bit too miniature, with the result that she carve her feet elegant badly during the forty irregular takes. The result was worth it. The dance ranks with “Night and Day,” “Let’s Face the Music and Dance,” and “Cheek to Cheek” as their greatest romantic dance number.

Although the supporting cast and the humor is not quite at the same level as TOP HAT and THE Happy DIVORCEE, this is nonetheless a resplendent movie apart from the music. While I would unexcited recommend those other two films above this one, I would recommend that anyone with the tiniest bit of interest in vast musicals glance all three, as well as catching the dance numbers of FOLLOW THE Quick.

Fred Astaire is grace itself, with his apparent ease concealing the regime of practice and preparation which lay slow every step. As for Ginger Rogers — her lithe, sensual body, her strong shoulders and willowy frame, gain her a delight to examine in this and all the staire/Rogers films. Pure sex appeal in dance! Occupy it — or better mild, wait for its release on DVD when the Turner Organisation finally realises what it’s got in its catalog!!!!

“Becket.” Now THERE is a good movie… probably one of the finest “biopics” ever written!! It tells the memoir of the relationship between two men: King Henry II of England, great-grandson to William the Conqueror, and Thomas Becket, a Saxon nobleman, a discontinuance friend of King Henry’s, and, ultimately, Archbishop of Canterbury.

As our account unfolds, Henry and Becket are inseparable friends. They employ their days feasting at banquets, carousing, wenching, and hunting. Henry (played by Peter O’Toole) appoints Becket (Richard Burton) to the post of Chancellor of England – the equivalent of Prime Minister and Treasurer. Becket is a man completely valid to the King, and a man with a exciting sense of honor. “Honor is a private matter within,” he tells Henry early in the film. “It’s an concept, and every man has his contain version of it.”

“Becket” is ultimately a epic of “the honor of God” versus “I am your king.” In an inconvenience to rep the upper hand in the ongoing controversy between the Church and plot, Henry names Becket to the post of Archbishop of Canterbury. Despite the King’s insistence, he refuses to hasten from his space that the church courts have jurisdiction in this and all similar cases. His continuing defiance of the King sends Henry into increasingly virulent paroxysms of rage against his faded friend. “I am your king!” he repeatedly tells Becket.

Ultimately, Becket is forced to cruise England, but returns after seven years, having agreed to a series of compromises with the King, but not conceding the main points of his argument. The truce is short lived, however. Becket continues to resist Henry’s efforts to intrude into Church affairs. Henry, inflamed once again, fills the air with oaths against his new-found foe, asking at one point: “Will no-one rid me of this meddlesome priest? ” On December 29, 1170, four of his barons abolish Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, on the altar of Canterbury Cathedral.

“Becket” is based on the stage play of the same name by French playwright Jean Anouilh, and adapted for the cloak by Edward Anhalt (who won the 1964 “Best Screenplay” Academy Award for his efforts) . It was also nominated for 11 other Oscars, including Best Portray and Best Actor.

This is one of those movies where words can’t really grunt the depth and quality of the performances turned in by its stars. It’s rare to regain a film with one performance of such grand magnitude; I don’t ever rob seeing two such lustrous performances in one movie! For Burton and O’Toole are so very reliable in their roles as Becket and Henry, that they seem almost to become the very characters they’re playing. Their acting is refined, unaffected, completely without ego, almost effortless.

“Becket” is one of those respectable veteran movies so accepted forty years ago… the kind with world-class actors delivering lines from a agreeable screenplay; with an absorbing subject at its heart; sumptuous sets; and brilliant costumes. Maybe the film doesn’t quite match the tastes of today’s moviegoers as well as it did 37 years ago; but, if you’re looking for some good entertainment by the best actors in the business, “Becket” is indeed an agreeable choice!

This 1964 film deals with the destroy of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket, after his stale drinking buddy, King Henry II, famously asked, “Who will rid me of this turbulent priest!? ” Its been a matter of vast debate whether Henry actually meant to order the slay of his used friend and, to me at least, this film almost makes the case that Henry’s words were honest the impulsive, possibly drunken words of a rather immature man thrust, by heredity, into a site of power he was not yet ready for.

One might judge that the political execute of a priest in a pre-Reniassance England would earn for a rather dry, humorless film. Luckily, Becket proves them unsuitable. Though director Peter Glenville was not a flashy stylist and occasionally does allow the film to become a bit stagey, he was also a incredible director of actors and manages to collect fabulous lead performances from a young Peter O’Toole (as Henry) and even from the normally diffident Richard Burton (as Becket) . When the film begins, it feels very mighty like a comedy. When we first meet Becket and Henry, they are two young, dismal friends who expend most of their time drinking and wenching. Though, as expected, O’Toole is hilarious as the fun-loving monarch, even Burton manages a few slyly sardonic line readings. Years later, in an interview with David Letterman, O’Toole would admit that both the lead actors were drunk during the majority of the shooting and basically objective having a great aged time of it. Their sense of fun in these early scenes is easily translatable to the audience and its hard not to like these two contemptible rogues and, perhaps, to even secretly want to collect a time machine and go hang out with them. O’Toole and Burton were friends in right life and the mutual affection the two shared is especially definite and endearing and serves to build the film’s later events all the more tragic.

The film takes a serious turn when the previous Archbishop dies and Henry, seeing a draw to acquire things easier for himself, appoints his ragged friend Becket to the spot. However, once installed, Becket discovers his soul. He becomes a rare example of a man who power does not corrupts but instead serves to purify. As a leader, Becket discovers his lost integrity and tragically, this leads to his hold martyrdom and later canonization. Fittingly, this man redeemed by the church (and who would guess that this would be the premise of such a hilarious, engaging, and downright fun film? ) becomes patron saint of the clergy.

That said, this isn’t really a film about religion as noteworthy as its about friendship and the brand one pays for taking a stand. This is one of the best historical films I have ever seen and should be seen by anyone eager in either a favorable record or unbiased some of the best acting ever attach on camouflage. There’s something comely about a film that surprises you by defying your expectations and Becket is a sizable example of one of those films.
