Lincoln and Lee at Antietam covers the entire struggle of the Antietam Campaign. The political thought about why Lincoln needed a Union victory and Lee’s need to recall the war north were covered as well as the battle. With various interviews featuring historians such as James McPherson, this documentary is very well done. The battle coverage is brief and not entirely descriptive although it includes reenactment scenes from the 125th, 135th and 140th Antietam Reenactments. A majority of the footage and photography is satisfactory as it shows the beauty of the Maryland landscape around Antietam. Some of the film really points out General McClellan’s “slow-to-react” device of dealing with Lee’s invasion and how he missed a multiple of opportunities to really whip Lee during this campaign.

Being a reenactor, covering a battle in detail in under two hours is nearly impossible. Naturally I would like to scrutinize more. I did be pleased the political views shown on both sides be it Union or Confederate. It showcased the importance of how crucial this conflict was to each party. It presented the facts about what could be gained and lost for both armies and governments that I liked.

For a archaic reenactor or student of the battle of Antietam, a majority of this presentation is fairly basic and might be too standard although McPherson’s explanation about why Antietam was politically distinguished for Lincoln is something most people could learn about in this substantial presentation.

I bought this for my husband who loves anything Civil War related. I read the reviews and seemed to be well received. It was advantageous. We both plan it was very well done. I highly reccomend it!

When this film was originally broadcast on PBS in 1998, I had not heard of the 1918 Spanish Influenza. I was apprehensive that I had never heard of the 1918 pandemic, given the impact it had on the 20th century. I’ve now read every book I coould accept that chronicles the outbreak. Some of the historical facts in the film may be disputed in other histories, but it’s a solid documentary and I highly recommend it. It is a rivoting film.

This was my common American Experience documentary. I saw it years ago and never forgot it, so I bought it recently from Amazon to survey if it composed had the same enact on me. It did. A haunting and poignantportrait of our innocence in that era. The filmmakers paid expansive attention to detail and successfully captured the mood.This is such an arresting film I had to give it five stars.

“Where were you in `62? “

I wasn’t around in `62 — I was born in `63, as a matter of fact, and I was 10 when George Lucas’ American Graffiti was released. I wasn’t really aware of either George Lucas or American Graffiti in 1973, although four years later I would know Lucas from his next — and most current — film, Star Wars. I did not go to the movies grand in 1973, but I saw this astonishing film when it was broadcast by ABC some years later. (ABC, capitalizing on its “hot” original sitcom, Three’s Company, shamelessly promoted it as “starring Suzanne Somers.” In fact, Suzanne is not even billed with the eight “stars.”)

If film and television historians have it honest, though, American Graffiti was the catalyst for the 1950s Nostalgia fad that begat TV’s Overjoyed Days, Laverne and Shirley, and the blessedly short-lived Joanie Loves Chachi (not to mention Sha Na Na and Broadway`s Grease) . And it isn’t terribly surprising that Gay Days and its spin-offs owe their inspiration — if not their very existence — to Lucas’ first major culturally critical film. Gay Days starred Ron Howard, who (as Ronny Howard) had second billing in Graffiti, while Laverne and Shirley costar Cindy Williams was the female lead.

American Graffiti is a bittersweet yet comedic view at what the DVD publicity blurb says was “America’s last age of innocence.” In the summer of `62, JFK was in the White House, the Beatles were unexcited unknown in this side of the Atlantic, and drive in diners and movie palaces were very favorite. There was no Internet or even Studio 54 honest yet, so kids went cruising, looking for girls to take up or rivals to accelerate in their souped-up hot rods. (Lucas, in the Making Of documentary on the 25th Anniversary DVD, says his intent in making American Graffiti was to document cruising as a socio-cultural phenomenon that died in the more turbulent half of the 1960s.)

The movie’s structure — commonplace now but it was revolutionary at the time — intertwines several plots challenging a group of recently graduated Southern California high school seniors on their last night before going to college. Curt (Richard Dreyfuss) is fretting about going to college in the East with his friend Steve (Howard) . Wracked with indecision, he spends his last night in town searching for The Blonde in the White Thunderbird (Suzanne Somers in her first, albeit limited, role) . His misadventures cause him to step out of character, especially when he crosses paths with The Pharohs, the local gang of miscreants.

Curt’s sister Laurie (Williams) must not only cope with her brother’s last small bout with “chilly feet” but with the scare of losing Steve. In what may be a typical area for couples who are “actual” but are going to be separated by circumstances, she’s devastated by Steve’s suggestion that they “gape other people” while they are in school. “I can’t inquire of you to be a monk,” Laurie says with fake bravado, but in “The Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” sequence, it is determined that she is pain and exasperated.

The other two subplots of this unbelievable film center on Toad (Charlie Martin Smith) and John (Paul Le Mat) . Toad is the car-crazy, girl-deprived nerd that we either knew in school or that we inspect in ourselves. His attempts to ticket the glowing Debbie (Candy Clark) are hilarious — rivaled only by a similarly themed scene in Summer of ‘42 — only to contemplate that Debbie likes him for who he really is. John, on the other hand, is the Han Solo of this bunch, the high school dropout who loves snappy cars and even faster women. He, too, discovers a tender side as he is saddled with 12-year-old Carol (a pre-One Day at a Time Mackenzie Phillips) . Not only must he learn patience while driving around with Carol, but also he is being challenged as the top gallop racer by Bob Falfa (played by the man who would be Han Solo, Harrison Ford) .

All these stories will converge in a climactic, winner hold all run, and several Lucas touchstones will resurface in his later Star Wars series — the choice to either steal or reject a clear path, the relationship between men and their machines, and the quest for either treasure or adventure.

Serving as a unifying thread to all these subplots is Wolfman Jack, mostly heard on the radio but seen briefly in a Yoda/Ben Kenobi style of mentor for restless Curt.

Lucas uses music here very effectively. Each song (and there are over 40 here, ranging from Rock Around the Clock to The Large Pretender) was chosen to provide emotional context, not fair period atmosphere. He envisioned American Graffiti as a musical “with no singing or dancing.”

This film is fun to eye and definitely deserves having been votes as one of the American Film Institute’s top 100 Films of All Time. Peruse it with a friend or alone, and if you were of age in the 1960s, retort the movie’s illustrious log line: “Where were you in `62? ”

I originally watched this movie in high school. Despite having been told about most of the best scenes in arrive by my friends, it was serene a lot of fun. Of course, a lot of other people concept so too, as it spawned a nostalgia craze for the 50s and early 60s resulting in many (too many? ) seasons of “Cheerful Days,” among others.

A few years ago, I saw the movie again on TV. I realized that, even though I was grand more venerable (at least physically), this movie calm seemed very very agreeable.

I recently got the DVD and watched it properly and I have to say that, after careful scrutiny, this really is one of the finest films ever made. I won’t retell a epic that’s grand better told by the movie, but: it has a lot of laughs, but it’s not entirely a comedy (especially the ending) ; it has plenty of music, but it’s not a musical; it has plenty of action, but no blood and gore; it seems incredibly realistic, but there is never a tiring, moment; there are multiple storylines and an ensemble cast, but it never gets confusing.

Every aspect of this movie is impressive, but I’m particularly struck by the genius of George Lucas and associates when it comes to casting. Every actor in this movie seems perfect for the role they play. If you study hard you’ll view quite a few familiar faces getting their begin (including Suzanne Somers very briefly as the girl in the Thunderbird) . Many, particularly Harrison Ford & Richard Dreyfuss, went on to long, successful careers. Although they were all stout in this film, I notion that Candy Clark was a standout.

If you win this collector’s edition of the DVD you’ll also be able to peruse an in-depth “extra” on the legend late the making of the film – very animated. It’s entertaining to eye that somebody as currently celebrated as Lucas had to be incredibly patient and persistent (and effect up with a lot of astounding Hollywood idiots) in his early days before his thought was finally realized. His success in making this movie under such tough circumstances makes the extinguish product even more impressive. It’s also very impressive to me that George Lucas went from writing/directing/creating a movie like “THX 1138″ to this and then to “Star Wars” – all three very advantageous and VERY different films. I don’t know of anyone else who has accomplished anything quite like that.

Although I’m now fleet approaching middle age, I wasn’t really frail enough to be a fraction of the era depicted in the movie, so this isn’t a nostalgia wobble for me. The music isn’t my music – I’m more of a post-British Invasion fan. But the fact that a movie can create you characterize deeply to characters from a realistic time and space you’ve never been says something distinguished. Also, the fact that it I’ve now enjoyed it on several different levels and at widely varying ages says even more…

Simply one of the greatest movies ever made.

The contents of these shows are very special – gripping, educational, and essential historically. The first 3 TV shows usually had a fun, spellbinding memoir for the first half of the exhibit with scientists in the second half giving scientific info on how future state flights might be possible, based on the facts known in the 1950s. A fun science fiction record about a female being kidnapped by a robot from Mars includes a very silly scene of Donald Duck being shown as fraction of a long line of Martian monsters chasing the female. There is involving animation exploring wildly imaginative ideas of different lifeforms that might exist on Mars. This animation caused Walt Disney to mutter to Ward Kimball, “How do you guys near up with all these crazy ideas? “

Our Friend The Atom (1/23/57) Walt Disney uses a scene from the film “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea” to introduce the yarn of atomic energy and then turns the program over to Dr. Heinz Haber, a distinguished atomic energy scientist of that time. There is a fun though-provoking sage of “The Fisherman and the Genie” included as share of extensive animation showing the history of the atom. This history of the atom also included another scene I noteworthy relish – how an early Greek theory of the atom was lost for centuries.

You learn hard facts about the subjects of location recede, atoms, and rockets in an provocative and unforgettable device. I deem the Discovery Channel could learn a thing or two from these films.

The bulk of these films are live action, but the animation that is included is heavenly in that it is so different looking from what we normally reflect Disney. As soon as I ripped originate my “Where the Light Is” Live DVD I watched it all the intention through. John manages to steal the audience with unique tweakings of his top songs. This film shows us, what Mayer calls, his three incarnations; Introspective acoustic artist, rocking power trio guitarist and hit producing singer/songwriter. To me, they don’t feel like three different people. The talent and heart of John Mayer weave through all of these, so-called, incarnations to contain them together.

Shot on film, the movie has the feel of some classic concert movies. A bunch of cameras with arresting angles and some peaceful editing lend an intimacy to the viewing experience. You glean to examine perspectives not normally seen during a live prove and seeing it on the great camouflage, close-up and personal added a level of excitement that you don’t regain while watching a DVD on your TV. On Neon Mayer exhibits his nimble fingers and creative chord changes we don’t normally gawk in a pop artist and a nicely arranged version of Tom Petty’s Free Fallin’ fits nicely into the station.

Johnny and the Trio play the second state and they really can rock. Like power trios of the past, such as the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream, these three highly talented musicians push each other to their limits and pull us along with them. At times it was like a roaring locomotive with all three frantically stoking the fire. On the exceptional insensible blues number Out of My Mind there is a fire burning as Mayer wrings every notice from the neck of his guitar until, it seems, there’s nothing left.

The hit producing singer/songwriter closed the note and his band, as tight as ever, doesn’t disappoint. One of the highlights was a interesting version of Gravity that featured one of Mayer’s heartfelt guitar solos that never fail to trace. One nice thing, for me, was his staying away from some of the sappier pop songs that I normally skip over on my iPod.

There’s some insightful commentary by Mayer that opens the film and is interspersed between numbers and these clips are short enough to retain the film though-provoking along nicely.

If you’re a John Mayer fan there is plenty here to satisfy you. If you’re not familiar with Mr. Mayer’s work this film is a big introduction to a young talent who, I feel, aloof has plenty of room to grow as an artist.

I dismiss naysayers of PLATOON as a soapbox for writer/director Oliver Stone’s political agenda unbiased as noteworthy as I dismiss Mr. Stone’s politics. PLATOON hits you between the eyes with its depictions of warfare and human conflict, again and again. There’s nothing to feel fine about by watching this movie, impartial as there is nothing to feel generous about by fighting a war. It is a sad, negative film–a negative film that happens to be compelling, thought-provoking, and very riveting.

Oliver Stone’s Platoon transcends the romanticization that so often infuses our thinking about war with a painfully impartial portrayal of its dehumanizing effects. Charlie Sheen plays Chris Taylor, whose idealism drives him to leave college for the hellish jungles of Vietnam. He sheds his innocence rapidly, however, as the horrors of war retract a heavy toll on his body and his sanity. After witnessing acts of barbarity by fellow soldiers–including rape and the deliberate killing of civilians–Taylor becomes aware that he is fighting not only an external enemy, but an inner one as well.

Representing the sides of this internal battle are Sergeant Elias (William Dafoe), who shows compassion towards his men and is outraged by atrocities he witnesses, and Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger), who displays no regard for human life. The unusual Swan Princess movie is exquisite, for the most section, with catchy music, immense bellow talent, and an bright status. My 4-year outmoded daughter has watched it many times, role-plays the leads with her dolls, and has asked many questions about the set which has led to some titillating discussions.

The Swan Princess III, on the other hand, is terrible. It is actually painful for me to look. One character, Rogers, who is otherwise rather dignified in the other movies, becomes a love-struck idiot in this one–it’s a cringeable performance, especially since the object of his affection, Zelda, is so morally bankrupt.

Fantastic transfer on the France disc- rich intrepid colors, splendid detail, didn’t discover a brand of video noise or artifacting. Note- the Amazon description lists this series (France, Italy, England) as being in 1:33 aspect ratio- they are NOT! Rotund 16×9/- aesthetic!

If you appreciate the Maxa series/and or France, you will savor this disc- an absolute no-brainer.

The images are sparkling. It is in 1080i but aloof looks unbelievable. Very informative. Rudy Maxa is tantalizing to listen to and he gives splendid tips for travelling in the areas he documents. I felt I had to review this blu-ray when I saw one of the two reviews showing a one star review because the person apparantly didn’t update their firmware for their Sony laptop computer and had problems watching the disk and rated this one star. They dinged all 3 blu-ray videos in this series for the same reason. There are other titles in this series including England and Italy which are also filmed beautifully and are consuming. Also video is 16:9 and not 1.33:1. Stunning widescreen.

Many of Powell and Pressburger’s films sight the life of the artist and the power of the artistic imagination. In THE RED SHOES and PEEPING TOM, most notably, the writer-directors convey the sacrifices that art sometimes demands from its acolytes.

Balletophiles often praise THE RED SHOES, but one need not be a fan of ballet to be amazed by the film’s emotional power and fantastic staging. On the Criterion DVD, the saturated reds that picture the artist’s blood sacrifice, and the chilly aqua-blues that picture the (counterfeit) promise of life and romance outside of art, appear with unmatched vividness. Powell is a master of color, and has influenced a generation of filmmakers (through the advocacy of his admirer Martin Scorcese) with his theories about how color and music contribute to the thematic impact of a film.

Anton Walbrook, who plays the impressario Lermontov in THE RED SHOES, is one of Powell and Pressburger’s celebrated actors, appearing to gorgeous accomplish in THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP as well. Moira Shearer, the actress/dancer who plays the lead, made her reputation on THE RED SHOES. She also dances in one segment of the rarely-seen Powell/Pressburger masterpiece THE TALES OF HOFFMAN.

The Criterion DVD has the shapely sound and relate we’ve reach to ask from the Voyager Company. Entertaining disc features include: an audio track of Jeremy Irons reading from the novel Hans Christian Anderson fairy myth, the complete text of Powell and Pressburger’s novelization of the movie, an extensive collection of Scorcese’s memorabilia, and a comparison of the Red Shoes Ballet with the filmed storyboard sketches the directors dilapidated as a guide. One fantastic addition for Powell and Pressburger fans is their filmography — brief descriptions with cast lists and dates for all their films, most of which also have film clips included. It’s a chance to recognize scenes from some of the long-lost works in their catalogue.

Although the opening credits claim that “any similarity to real-life persons or events are purely accidental” don’t be fooled: Boris Lermontov, the autocratic Russian ballet impresario, is obviously modelled after Serge Diaghilev. Like Boris, Diaghilev had a series of relationships with his “proteges” (like Vaslav Nijinsky or Leonid Massine), and when these proteges left his bed to marry (women), Diaghilev would gain furious and kick them out of the company. “Ballet Lermontov” like “Ballet Russes” produced a mix of classical ballet works as well as fresh compositions with then unknown composers. The character of Julian Crasten is a stand-in for the likes of Stravinsky, Debussy, Prokofiev et al. whom Diaghilev supported. The real-life Diaghilev was always surrounded by a crew of male “helpers” (called the homosexual mafia) — it is this intention in the film too. And once he fired his male dancers, Diaghilev would often utilize years trying to earn them relieve into the company. In the movie, prima ballerina Irina is coldly dismissed when she marries, but is celebrated benefit when Vicky leaves.

Vicky Page’s descent into madness as she is pulled implacably apart by Boris and her husband is a thinly disguised substitute of the tragic career of the schizophrenic Vaslav Nijinsky, who was fired by Diaghilev after his marriage, and lost his fragile own on reality. Vicky’s most distinguished ballet is the “red shoes.” Nijinsky’s was “Spectre de la Rose,” which had him dressed in a red rose-petal costume. The finale of the ballet has him leaping out a window.

But, art does not exactly imitate life. Anton Walbrook’s portrayal of Boris is great colder, icier, then the real-life Diaghilev. He has the bolt of white hair, but he (wisely) does not perform himself into a Diaghilev caricature. He is skinny, whereas Diaghilev is portly. There’s no cane, no monocle, no hat. Plus, Diaghilev was genuinely and passionately attached to his “proteges”, whereas Boris’s obsession with his proteges is sexless and almost detatched.

Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger have set aside together a obedient, if melodramatic fable. The young Moira Shearer is glorious as Vicky Page, an ambitious ballerina. “The Red Shoes” (a fable by Hans Christian Andersen) refers to the ballet which makes Vicky’s career — in the ballet, the ballerina is forced to dance in her red shoes until death. It’s an determined symbol of the struggle between total, monastic devotion to art, and the desire to have a normal life. When Vicky falls for Julian Crasten (Marius Goring), the composer of the Red Shoes ballet, complications of course earn.

The movie benefits from strong casting. As Boris, Anton Walbrook makes the character creepy, wintry, and self-centered, yet not a villain. In his smooth rage he is both gross and pitiable. He can be gentle too: when he asks Vicky abet to the ballet, he says “We already miss you. Do you miss us? ” Actual life ballet danseur Robert Helpmann is rather fey as the leading dancer of Ballet Lermontov, and Leonid Massine is super-hammy as the ballet master Ljubov. Most of all, Moira Shearer, with her knowing red hair, sure balletic talent, and soft-spoken determination, makes the movie more than fair a backstage soap.

Looking at this movie now, Julian actually becomes more unsympathetic. He is condescending about the ballet, and there’s no ssign that he appreciates Vicky’s dancing. The marriage, after initial passion, seems to turn loveless. His ultimatum to Vicky to give up dancing is incredibly selfish. So Boris’s maintain on Vicky is understandable. At one point, Boris asks Vicky, “Do you want to live? ” She replies, “I want to dance.” This movie makes us understand why such an attitude is possible.
