“Green Street Hooligans” sets a family drama and coming-of-age tale in the world of football (soccer) hooliganism. Matt Buckner (Elijah Wood) was a promising journalism student before he was expelled from Harvard University over his roommate’s cocaine stash. Suddenly aimless, Matt wanders to London to visit his sister Shannon (Claire Forlani) and her British husband Steve (Marc Warren). When Matt tags along to a soccer game with Steve’s brother Pete (Charlie Hunnam), he finds that there is a lot more to soccer culture than the game on the field. Pete is a member of a football firm or gang called the Green Street Elite (GSE). Firms are organizations of fanatic fans who battle other firms for reputation and dominance -by beating the crap out of each other. Matt is attracted to the high energy, danger, and physicality of the GSE and embraces the lifestyle. But eventually word gets around that he might be a journalist – and hooligans hate coppers and journalists.

I couldn’t say how accurately “Green Street Hooligans” represents the dynamics of football firms or the relationships of their members. But the film does provide a window into a subculture that is common in the UK and South America, where soccer reigns supreme, but which Americans may never have heard of. Contrary to the American cocept of gangsters, soccer hooligans are neither Mafioso nor errant youth. They are grown, middle-class men who function perfectly well in normal jobs. But outside of work and domestic obligations, they are completely lawless. They happily adopt a brutality that could leave them dead or maimed in the blink of an eye. “Green Street Hooligans” requires some suspension of disbelief to accept more mundane behavior. Would Steve really send his naïve Yank brother-in-law to a soccer game with his estranged hooligan brother? No. That kind of illogic is common in this film. But the culture of hooliganism, the allure of their violence, is at the same time stupid and fascinating.

The DVD (Warner 2006): “The Making of Hooligans” (6 min) is not about making the movie. It is a series of interviews with actors Elijah Wood, Claire Forlani, Charlie Hunnam, director Lexi Alexander and producer Deborah Del Prete which discuss the characters and the phenomenon of football firms. There is a music video for the song “One Blood” by Terence Jay, which sounds uncannily like the Dire Straits’ song “Brother in Arms”. Terence Jay also acts in the movie. He plays Matt’s elite WASP Harvard roommate, the cokehead. Subtitles for the film are available in English, French, and Spanish.

Of everything written about this small film starring Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam, the most interesting is to see the lukewarm reactions from the UK side, which found the film is too violent, and dismissed it as implausible. And it must be admitted that they are complaining with some good reasons.

For the film is really violent, and Elijah Wood may be the least plausible choice for making a film about the hooligans, almost fanatic supporters of football team in England. Elijah Wood plays Matt, a Harvard college undergraduate student wrongly expelled because of his irresponsible roommate. Matt flies to the home of his married sister (Clair Forlani), and there meets his brother-in-law Pete (Charlie Hannam), devoted leader of the Green Street Elite, bunch of the hooligans supporting West Ham United.

The set-up part is contrived, but you should wait a while. Soon the film’s story leads us to its gist, about how Matt (estranged from his father now in Kabul) finds his new existence in this underworld of the `Firm’ and its hooliganism. The film does not fail to show the complexity of the characters. The members of the `Firm’ have jobs to do when there is not a game (believe me nor not, one of them is an airplane pilot by profession), and not exactly bad guys at all, but when it comes to football games and the rivalry between the Firms, they turn fierce and unstoppable street fighters who have their own rules to follow. You cannot say the script is an in-depth study of hooligans, but still good enough to make us care its characters.

Besides its violent scenes, the criticism we hear against `Green Street Hooligans’ is about its cast, Elijah Wood in particular. Yes, the star of blockbuster hit `Lord of the Rings.’ Throughout `GSH’ Elijah Wood never looks like a hooligan. For all Matt’s repeated bloody fights, he still looks a visitor or outsider in the Green Street Elite, but that is the point of the film because he is there to provide the viewpoint from an outsider. And some UK reviewers complained about the accent of Charlie Hunnam. I don’t know because I do not have much linguistic knowledge, but to me his acting as charismatic Pete looked very good (though Leo Gregory as discontented GSE member is more impressive, as you will see).

More serious problem with `Green Street Hooligans’ is its incredible and too convenient coincidences in the story, which makes the whole film too melodramatic. Matt happens to have done two (or more) things, which results in a big problem. The far-fetched situation looks totally out of place among the gritty descriptions of hooliganism, and Claire Forlani’s character always remains a typical lady-in-distress image, which is another cliché in the filmmaking. German-born director Lexi Alexander sticks to the realistic approach to the street fight sequences (with blood and dirty words), but she somehow is content with the autopilot direction when showing several episodes that are not directly related to hooligans.

But I was intrigued with the main story about the friendship between males, or kind of combat camaraderie depicted in `Green Street Hooligans.’ I know this is not the only film about hooliganism – for example, `The Football Factory’ and `The Firm’ (starring Gary Oldman, not Tom Cruise) – but `Green Street Hooligans’ is worth a look even though you don’t know football for its strong and compelling main story.

Loosely based on the noted recent by Jules Verne and spot in the slow 19th Century, LEAGUES offers the narrative of Professor Arronax (Paul Lukas), his assistant Conseil (Peter Lorre), and harpooner Ned Land (Kirk Douglas), who are coaxed by the United States government to abet in the search for a sea monster said to be terrorizing shipping lanes. But the monster is not of flesh and blood, and soon the three salvage themselves in the hands of the mysterious Captain Nemo (James Mason) as prisoners aboard the Nautilus–a fully functional submarine edifying of ramming ships and sending them to the ocean floor.

Underwater photography was hardly recent in 1954, but never had it been weak so extensively nor to such visually fair conclude, and the art designs–particularly those for the Nautilus–are justly noted. But for all its beauty, it is the performances which fabricate the film work. James Mason does not merely play Nemo, he seems to be Nemo; after seeing his performance it is impossible to imagine any other actor in the role. Paul Lukas adds yet another brilliantly understated performance to his memorable career, and while Kirk Douglas and Peter Lorre are hardly the Ned Land and Conseil of the Verne original they have surprising chemistry and lend the film grand stir.

At the time of its release, LEAGUES was the single most expensive motion represent ever made (ironically it would loose that dubious distinction later that same year to yet another film featuring James Mason: A STAR IS BORN), and every penny of the money spent shows in the onscreen result. While many of Disney’s live-action films are fondly recalled, few have had enduring fame, mighty less claim to location as art–but LEAGUES is the exception, and although the episodic nature of the record seems a shade languid from time to time it remains both a landmark and one of the most influential films of its decade. Truly savory from begin to carry out.

GFT, Amazon Reviewer

Like many of the other reviewers of this movie, I’m a pre-boomer who was dazzled by the film as a child. Somewhere in my aging mom’s attic, I have a few bolts (painted wood) from the movie dwelling of the Nautilus, which I “borrowed” from one of the Disney properties as a kid nearly a half century ago. I remember taking a bus from LA to Burbank to study through the slats of the fence in the aid lot of the Disney Studios and seeing a partial model of the Nautilus, perhaps 1/3 scale, tossed in a corner like so remarkable debris. What I would have given to be able to sprint that model home.

When I viewed the VHS version of this film a couple of years ago, I was bitterly disappointed by the abominable quality which made the watching experience actually painful to a fan like me. But, let me sing you, this DVD is as thrilling as the VHS was painful. This fully-restored version of the film comes roaring encourage to life in all of its glory and then some. It’s the best film restoration these broken-down eyes have ever beheld. Watched on a state-of-the-art widescreen TV, this is every bit the experience it was in the ’50’s and I consider it’s astounding that this colossal film is now preserved for the ages, objective as it was when it was first released.

Is this a perfect movie? No. Even as a kid, I noticed that the background music was too cheesy, that Kirk Douglas’s songs seemed gratuitous, that the fish swimming outside the sizable porthole were cartoonish, and that the electrically-illuminated leer of the Giant Squid made an otherwise perfect special accomplish survey a bit spurious. I’m objective as puzzled by those weaknesses today as I was then, especially since all other aspects of the film, including the numerous, Oscar-winning special effects spirited the Nautilus, are masterful. But no movie is perfect and this movie, minor warts and all, is nothing less than a memorial to the genius of Disney, the acting of James Mason, the passion of the Disney staff, and the vision of Jules Verne.

I’m not a Brad Pitt fan. His physical attributes don’t astound and thrill me! But, I’ve got to give it to him: He was convincing in his dual roles as the coffee shop sweetie and Mr. Death. Claire Forlani, whom I’ve never seen in a film before was simply intelligent. She’s the perfect Susan in this parable of one man’s last days on earth. Anthony Hopkins as Bill Parrish is mighty, as always. He truly makes you feel as though he’s a man with minute time left and has to expend the rest of his alloted time cleaning up his act, making amends with his loved ones, assuring his daughters that he loves them and has always loved them. Also, Marcia Satisfied Hardin and Jeffrey Tambor are both extremely advantageous as the number two daughter (in her father’s heart) and her slightly inept (business wise) husband. They’re both touching. I wasn’t achieve off by the length of the film. I judge we should select the time to delight in some things in life. Dumb down, relax and savor this glowing offering from Martin Brest. You did a first-rate job, Marty!

I’ll admit that only morbid curiosity led me to discover this movie upon it’s initial release. The premise of this remake sounded moving, but the over the top costs and production problems had been tabloid fodder for months. When it didn’t do blockbuster business, not many people were surprised.

It’s a shame that this movie didn’t do better than mediocre reviews and lukewarm boxoffice receipts. There I sat in the audience marveling at the aesthetic acquire and antiques, not to mention the pleasing costume get. So many films these days go for established designers, but this movie outmoded a studio designer great like the days of the weak Hollywood system. The attention to detail is comely.

As for the acting, it all boiled down to one scene for me. Anthony Hopkins describing the first time he’d ever had a lamb sandwich to Brad Pitt. It turns into one of the most splendid remembrance speeches of a widower for the wife he unruffled grieves. Needless to say even this heartless cynic got a bit misty. To have a man affirm such treasure without sounding condescending or corny is quite a feat. It’s enough to construct you hold in the power of a gracious actor.

Brad Pitt also deserves kudos for this role. Despite living through a personal hell and sustaining an injury, he does a big job in his double role. I conception the scene in which Death says beneficial bye to Claire Forlani’s character was some of his best acting.

I have waited since 1968 to gaze this movie which I first encountered in Carlos Claren’s seminal book AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE Dread FILM which traces dismay movies from 1895 through 1967. It has been worth the wait. In fact I was so taken with the film that I immediately watched it again and enjoyed it more the second time. Made in 1924 at the height of Expressionism in German restful cinema, THE HANDS OF ORLAC is the one of the finest examples of this genre that I have ever seen. Directed by Robert Wiene (THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI) the film combines lighting, sets, camerawork, and performances into a dreamscape of expansive power.

The movie is like a hallucination approach to life as we follow the descent of Conrad Veidt into the depths of madness. Veidt, more than any other quiet performer, customary his body language to illustrate and explain the most intense emotions. What really surprised me was the sensual almost erotic quality of scenes enchanting him and the two famous female performers Alexandra Sorina and Carmen Cartellieri. This adds an element not to be found in the more stylized CALIGARI and shows that there was more to Robert Wiene than we have seen so far. The anecdote of a concert pianist whose amputated hands are replaced with those of a murderer has been remade a number of times most notably by MGM in 1935 as Wrathful Like with Peter Lorre. However none of those versions can compare to this one. Having said that let me also say that those odd with quiet films will net this version tough going for it requires you to adjust your show day expectations to those of the peaceful era where body language and visual storytelling are everything. If you can do that then you should regain THE HANDS OF ORLAC a rewarding experience especially on repeated viewings.

The restoration of the film isn’t top notch (it resembles how NOSFERATU venerable to notice) but thanks to a remarkably brooding and effective pick up from Paul Mercer you’ll be drawn in before you know it and will hardly discover the imperfections. This is a considerable better film than THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI and until other of his movies ogle the light of day to contradict the fact, THE HANDS OF ORLAC is Robert Wiene’s masterpiece. Thanks to Kino International and the F.W Murnau Foundation for making it available.

A current and special piece of calm cinema was the German Expressionist style of the 1920s which is characterized by the emphasis on emotions conveyed by atmospheric lighting and expressive acting, as opposed to what we might call `realism’. Although “The Hands of Orlac” is technically an Austrian production, the country is so closely related to Germany that it features a mainly German cast and crew, and all the typical characteristics of the classic German Expressionist style. Scenes have strong shadows or lighting to emphasize moods, and are usually drawn out to allow the actors to fully insist emotions, but there are also moments of realism such as a very convincing affirm smash plot, as well as the fast-moving climax which brings everything succor down to earth. Throughout most of this nearly 2-hour-length film, an eerie original orchestral find contributes to the somewhat other-worldly feeling of the whole fable, which revolves around the understanding of transplanted hands taking over their original host with characteristics of the hands’ unusual owner. This engaging belief comes from a French writer of the early 1900s when such Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror stories captured the imagination of many Europeans, and with the advent of enthralling pictures, they became perfect material for the German Expressionist style, of which “Cabinet of Dr Caligari” and “Nosferatu” are impartial some of the most distinguished examples.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Hands of Orlac! Click Here

Besides the artistic element of using light and shadow, the highlight for me personally is Conrad Veidt’s resplendent performance as Orlac, the concert pianist who receives the hands of a convicted murderer after being injured in a speak crash. This role is by far the most intensely expressive and emotion-packed performance I’ve seen by Veidt, and he carries the suspenseful energy of the account moral through the entire film. More than unprejudiced artistic expression however, “The Hands of Orlac” has a clever assassinate mystery theme running through it as well which deserves a limited careful attention to fully savor. With proper report quality and very capable music, this DVD is further enhanced with some bonus features including detailed notes with background information on the film and its cast and crew, as well as a trailer for its equally attractive 1935 sound remake “Exasperated Cherish” with Peter Lorre. Needless to say, “The Hands of Orlac” deserves its area alongside the best-known German soundless classics, and it has been worth the wait to glimpse the corpulent length restored version released by Kino Video.

My son absolutely loves Dragon Tales, when the display is over on PBS I hear “again again” and then I keep the DVDs in. This one is one of his favorites, it keeps him aloof while taking long trips in the car. It teaches the importance of following directions and is very light-hearted and droll. My son is 2 1/2 and he follows the stories along. I can ask him about Weezie losing her firebreath and he’ll express me about it. The sing-a-long songs are vast too!

My daughter loves the DVD, and it was a magnificent suited tag. My only complaint is that the default setting on the DVD is to reach on with the subtitles on. Most DVD’s near on without the subtitles (since most people don’t want them) and then you can turn them on if you don’t want them. This DVD is unprejudiced the opposite.
