If still you have any intention to shampoo the rug, then first sweep the rug so that settled dirt gets loosened. Sweeping should be followed by vacuuming so that dust is removed completely. This will make the rug look cleaner and might hold up your plans of washing the rug.
You should also make certain that spills on the rug should be cleaned as soon as they occur. On the basis of type of stains or spills, they should be blotted or scraped. If the milk has been scattered, then the affected part should be thoroughly washed with the mild soap and water so that the residue doesn’t rot. You are also recommended to sprinkle mixture of two cups of cornmeal and 1 cup of Borax to neutralize the pet smell. Let this mixture be left for about one hour before vacuuming.
