Columbia’s spring, 1959 release, “It Happened to Jane” should have been a box-office smash. It certainly had all the makings of a hit.

Starring Doris Day and Jack Lemmon, two of the screen’s most gifted comic performers, featuring a great supporting cast and set amidst some of the most beautiful scenery seen up to that date in wide-screen, it nevertheless opened and closed rather quickly.

Perhaps it was the title or the general lack of enthusiasm the studio seemed to have for the film, but it nevertheless provided more than ample entertainment for audiences who did venture into the theatres where it played and now, beautifully presented on DVD (It was never, oddly enough, given a release on video), it should more than provide ample pleasures for those who purchase or rent this delightful romp.

In short it is the story of a widow, with two children, who raises lobsters in a small Maine town who takes on a mighty railroad whose indifference had caused her to lose a shipment. She is assisted in her battle by smalltown lawyer/boyfriend, Jack Lemmon. This being Hollywood, the outcome may seem rather predictable but getting there is such fun that you can’t help but smile throughout and from time to time let out a major guffaw.

The film was released about 6 months before Doris Day began her many year reign as the top box-office star in the world. The film that made that possible was “Pillow Talk”. She was Oscar-nominated for her turn in that film but she is equally as good as Janie Osgood in this picture.

She beautifully epitomizes the strong willed, determined New England stock she plays and the audience is rooting for her from the first frame. It is a very skilled performance utilizing the natural empathy audiences feel for her and allowing her to display her one of a kind comic timing coupled with the “heart” comedy that she does better than anyone else. Miss Day and Lemmon are great together and one can only wish they’d had another chance to work together since they are naturals.

Lemmon does the sometimes neurotic, high-strung portrayal that he did skillfully for decades but it has rarely been funnier and more apt.

Ernie Kovacs has the role of his lifetime as railroad mogul, Harry Foster Malone. He chews the scenery with such skill and his scenes with Day and Lemmon are memorable. You dislike his character but also enjoy the relish with which the actor plays it.

Great supporting performances are contributed by Steve Forrest, Parker Fennelly, who briefly tried to fill Percy Kilbride’s shoes in a “Kettle” comedy at Universal, and Mary Wickes, making her fourth big screen appearance opposite Miss Day. (She would appear opposite her one more time, ten years later when she guest-starred on Miss Day’s hit CBS television series).

Richard Quine, who never achieved major success as a director despite a handful of good films and would forever be known as the man who accidentally shot and paralyzed his one time actress-wife Susan Peters, directs with confidence and capability. As noted by many, there is a Frank Capra-esque quality about the proceedings.

Miss Day sings the title tune and another song during the film in her customary way (i.e. one of the screen’s best female singers), and there are surprise appearances by several game show performers of the time.

“It Happened to Jane” may finally gain the reputation it deserves as one of 1959’s happiest surprises.

IT HAPPENED TO JANE was up until this DVD release something of a `lost classic’, having never been released on video and appearing only rarely on TV and cable. Doris Day stars in another domestic comedy which suits her wholesome girl-next-door persona to a tee.

She plays Jane Osgood, a young widow in Cape Anne, Maine, who runs a lobster farming business. When one of her shipments returns with the lobsters dead inside, Jane discovers that it was the fault of the railroad company. She turns to her old friend George Denham (Jack Lemmon) a young lawyer, and together they take on the tyrannical head of the railways Harry Foster Malone (Ernie Kovacs). It’s a cute, often very funny comedy. Doris Day and Jack Lemmon are fresh and appealing in the lead roles, and Day gets 2 numbers (”Be Prepared” and the Title Song). The movie also features Mary Wickes, Steve Forrest and Jayne Meadows. Based on a story by Max Wilk and Norman Katkov.

The DVD picture looks great, in a colourful anamorphic print. Extras consist of trailers for other Columbia classic movie titles.

I absolutely adore this film, a touching story of the relationship between an timid but passionate postal carrier and the Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda. As Neruda and his poetry instruct the mailman in the ways of love, a courtship blossoms that has all the humor and bittersweet missteps of the real thing. Director Radford uses a light touch to illuminate the unusual relationship between the exiled poet and an ordinary man. Massimo Troisi as Mario (the postman) turns in a fine performance that should not be missed; his characterization of a clueless man desperately in love with both words and a woman cannot be forgotten. Likewise, Philippe Noiret as Neruda provides a memorable portrait of a man who can forget the power of his words.

I can’t help comparing “Il Postino” to “Life is Beautiful”, also an Italian film that relies on initial humor to set up the pain found in the human heart. “Il Postino” is more subtle, however, and more realistic. Still, those who enjoyed “Life is Beautiful” should also like “Il Postino.”

I recommend this film highly. You don’t need to know anything about Neruda to enjoy it; all you need to be is human.

Il Postino is a wonderful and heartwarming adaptation of Antonio Skarmenta’s novel, El cartero de Neruda, which is not likely to disappoint audiences who are prepared to watch a foreign film with sub-titles. The movie is certainly not a tear-jerker, but any viewer will find themselves becoming emotionally attached to its characters and highly affected by the fate which befalls them.

The film, directed by Michael Radford, is the story of a humble Italian postman who is greatly changed by the famous Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda for whom he works for in a small Italian village. As the audience, we observe their acqaintanceship as it changes and eventually develops into a true and unforgettable friendship. Without a doubt, some audiences will find Il Postino tedious because of the simple plot and the lack of sex and violence. Nevertheless, it is an an emotional and powerful movie that I highly recommend because of its strong character portrayal. In my opinion, Il Postino is truly successful because of its wonderful acting by Massimo Troisi, who accurately portrays the innocent postman as well as Philippe Noiret, who is a very endearing and astonishing Pablo Neruda.

In addition to the acting, the Italian landscape is a breathtaking and integral part of Il Postino. Radford effectively incorporates the beautiful mountains and seascape as the story’s background. It is a refreshing decision by Radford which only adds to the poetry which Noiret recites periodically throughout the film.

I am certainly the type of person who prefers the book to the movie, but in this particular case, I feel that the movie surpasses the Skarmenta’s novel by far. I recommend this movie to anyone who is tired of movies with gratuitous sex and violence as well as hackneyed forumlas. The sub-titles are by no means a hinderance to the film and I guarentee by its end that you will be fascinated by the Italian language.

rug cleaning 1

January 6th, 2010 by angelina6277078

No doubt rugs adorn your homes but the most drudging chore is to cleanse and maintain them. Sometimes purchasing rugs could be an expensive affair and sometimes they may be dainty. So in order to protect your money invested and keep their look preserved, you need to avoid some common mistakes and follow few tips while Rug Cleaning

which can increase the life of your rug.

We should not thump the rug as this process might weaken the threads interweaved together resulting in tearing of the rug backing.

Do not vacuum the edges of the rug as vacuum cleaner will engulf the fringes into its beater bar and edges will get loosened and become crinkly and ropy.

You are also advised not to use rug sprays or shampoos because if they are not washed out thoroughly, they will capture more dust making them appear dustier.

If still you have any intention to shampoo the rug, then first brush the rug so that imbedded dirt gets slackens. Sweeping should be followed by vacuuming so that dust is removed thoroughly. This will make the rug look dirtless and might delay your plans of washing the rug.

You should also make certain that spills on the rug should be cleared as soon as they occur. On the basis of type of stains or spills, they are to be blotted or scraped. It can be blotted with help of dry clean towel by pressing from the outside towards the center. Repeat this process by folding the towel till the most of the moisture has been soaked up. If the milk has been spilled, then the area should be thoroughly rinsed with the mild soap and water so that the left over doesn’t rot. Incase of greasy spills and sugar based drinks spills, proper cleaning and washing is also needed with proper cleaners.

You are also recommended to sprinkle mixture of 2 cups of cornmeal and one cup of Borax to neutralize the pet odors. Let this mixture be left for about one hour before vacuuming.

As rugs get dusty quite often, you can also call experts to do this chore but this could be expensive. But with little heed, rug cleaning can be done conveniently at home.

I’ll withhold this brief as I’m probably already “preaching to the choir” here. However, unbiased on the off-chance that there are a few of you out there who have never known the wonder of “The Adventures of Superman” television series, may I honest say this: there has never been–and at this rate, it appears that there never will be–a greater, more gallant, more agreeable, and more palatable “Superman” in the history of the character, than the interpretation given to us by the gradual George Reeves.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Adventures of Superman – The Complete Fifth and Sixth Seasons! Click Here

And I’ll give you my reason why I beget that with all my heart in a single word: balance. George Reeves didn’t play Kent/Superman as “bumbler moron”/”hero”. He played Kent/Superman as “Hero Type A”/”Hero Type B”.

There is a superb bit of dialogue from the 1st (or was it the 2nd? ) season–a bit I’ll no-doubt mangle here–that really explains it all. A little group of mobsters are discussing the difficulties of life in Metropolis. Of course they mention Superman. But then, one of them utters the magic lines that go something like this: “Forget Superman. It’s that Kent guy at THE DAILY PLANET I danger about. There’s times that Kent and his typewriter terror me more than Superman.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Adventures of Superman – The Complete Fifth and Sixth Seasons! Click Here

That simple speech seared itself into my puny eight-year-old mind and heart for all time. Imagine that! The abominable guys feared Kent almost as great as they feared Superman! What a unbelievable life-lesson to deliver a boy: for all his wonderful powers, the thugs were almost more frightened of the “normal guy who wasn’t disquieted to stand up for what’s fair” than they were of “…the improbable being from the planet Krypton, with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men.”

And it was George Reeves and his dauntless portrayal of Kent/Superman who made you have that could be so.

Maybe that’s why this cripple grew up to be a writer. And every time I took on a bully–on the playground or in the corporate world–somewhere in the aid of my mind I was thinking, “Do the suitable thing, buddy. Mister Kent might be watching.”

Yes, I examine all the various yarn and production short-comings of “The Adventures of Superman”. But Reeves, in refusing to play Kent as a cartoon unich, gave the character of Kent/Superman a vitality that has yet to be equaled–CGI or no CGI.

And if that’s not enough to convince you, the jaded and cynical, to invest in these DVDs, let me fraction with you one, last, favorable memory: the first word my baby son ever uttered was, “GO!”. It was shouted with all the passion, glee, plan, and intensity a cramped heart could muster. And it was shouted as my son watched a dismal & white George Reeves get his celebrated running spring-board leap over the observatory fence in the classic climax of the episode, “Horror in the Sky”. And, in that instant, I knew what my baby boy knew–what all of us lucky enough to view the magic and wonder of “The Adventures of Superman” at a tender age knew: George Reeves WAS Superman.

And he always will be.

Completing the collection of “The Adventures of Superman”, the series’ final two seasons offers a mixed bag, for viewers; while some episodes are laughably unpleasant (offering up green-haired, midget Martians, a mind-reading mule, and Professor Pepperwinkle’s latest goofy inventions), some are, in fact, surprisingly obedient (tales of the search for a Civil War-era coat, a missing circus elephant, and a barber who reforms his childhood friend, now a gangster, are all very sweet, and quite palatable), and one of the last episodes filmed, “The Perils of Superman”, directed by George Reeves, himself, is a bonafide ‘classic’, with unsettling images of helmeted criminals walking the streets of Metropolis, and Clark, Lois, Jimmy, and Perry, each subjected to calm movie cliffhanger demises. Best of all, these last episodes present that Reeves, though far heavier and grayer by the series’ slay, never lost the sincerity or humor he had displayed in earlier seasons…Playing the Man of Steel may have been the “Kiss of Death” for his career, and, possibly, his life, but he never gave anything less than his best, and it shows!

There are moments worth savoring, in viewing the episodes; for Lois at her sexiest, accept “The Tomb of Zaharan”, where the Daily Planet business suit is replaced by a tight-fitting ‘Egyptian’ costume and shaded wig (Noel Neill is surprisingly voluptuous, and HOT!) …in fact, the entire sixth season offers Lois with brilliant ORANGE hair, which she actually makes leer Reliable…”Money to Burn” is a throwback to the early seasons, with a bogus ‘Fireman’s Friend’ mobile diner, and one of John Hamilton’s best performances as Perry White; “Whatever Goes Up” is ‘classic’ Jack Larsen, as Jimmy Olsen ‘invents’ an anti-gravity formula; and for sheer 50s pop culture shtick, rep “Superman’s Wife”, where a stereotypical, bleached-blonde policewoman ‘plays’ the Man of Steel’s bride to relieve nab a gang!

Also included in the collection is a made-for-dvd celebration of Jack Larson, offering current interviews with everyone’s celebrated ‘Jimmy Olsen’, Noel Neill, and a variety of the series’ historians. While not ‘in-depth’, it is tall fun!

The only ‘negative’ to the collection is the inconsistent characterize quality, with the color density frequently changing; the unusual prints certainly could spend some remastering.

While “Adventures of Superman – The Complete Fifth and Sixth Seasons” may lack the luster of the earlier seasons, fans of the display, and George Reeves, won’t be disappointed…and if you aren’t a fan, give the collection a chance, as you may become one!

I unprejudiced saw a special engagement of this latest 70th Anniversary version of Pinnochio at Disney’s El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood in reach of the DVD re-release. Though I am glad to perceive the movie be given public exposure on a mammoth theatrical cover, over the years I have seen many theatrical screenings of the movie on at least 12 different occasions including an modern nitrate 3-strip Technicolor studio vault print in the early 1980’s (before the studio dismantled its last nitrate screening room) and non-digital film restorations and was timorous to watch that this latest restored version has digitally tampered with the film’s unusual color palette for no justifiable reason.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pinocchio! Click Here

Some of the chosen character hues are current day, current color hues, but gape out of residence in this early inviting classic including distinct pinks, reds and blues which are reused so often in identical shades that to classic animation buffs it becomes distractingly noticeable. For those animation buffs who know about Pinnochio, Walt intentionally muted colors in some of the scarier or sadder scenes. In the restored version, for example, when Pinnochio gets locked in Geppetto’s “birdcage” the nighttime scene is knowing and garish where it should intentionally be darker and muted.

The unusual movie had hand inked character outlines in colors that matched the interior ink colors, none of that is apparent in this restoration. The characters, though admittedly sharper and clearer, survey color-wise like they were electronically tampered with, then reinserted in front of the unusual backgrounds.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pinocchio! Click Here

At this point, the pain is done and obviously this restoration was “stylistic.” But in any case, it might be compared with someone redoing the Mona Lisa with more novel color hues for the purpose of improving the artwork or making it more novel day acceptable. Either two things, perhaps no one at Disney was knowledgeable enough to view what the outside restoration company was planning to do with the film in early test segments or maybe they figured that new day DVD audiences would not know the disagreement or care, but this is the first “DIGITALLY RESTORED” classic Disney film that I have ever taken notify with. What a let down since it is my very accepted Disney film of all!!!

P.S. I was the founder of the obsolete, long time Disney employees’ Curious Film Club (later referred to as the Disney Film Club) which included Disneyland and Walt Disney Studio employees. It was founded in 1976 and continued on and off for many years afterward with visits from surviving unique Disney animators, screenings of rare Disney footage and more.

The one-two whammy of audience and significant indifference to “Pinocchio” and “Fantasia” killed Walt Disney’s desire to experiment with the limits of animation in the 1940s. From then on, play it first-rate was his motto. This may be one of the greatest tragedies to beset approved American culture in the 20th century; despite the depths of pretension and kitch in “Fantasia,” it was at least evidence of a entertaining mind in pursuit of the unattained — but “Pinocchio” must have broken ragged Walt’s heart. There are visual effects in this movie that remained unchallenged until the digital age, and it’s worth recalling that every single one of them was drawn by hand. It has one of the most sparkling and attractive musical scores in the history of the movies (I can’t hear Cliff Edwards’ high, pure falsetto holding that final heed of “When You Wish Upon a Star” without chills), a deeply plangent sense of emotion that never tips over into bathos, and a wealth of detail that is aloof staggering after 65 years. But it may be too gloomy a movie to achieve the popularity of more pleased Disney cartoons like “Snow White” — although even that one can frighten the tots. Now: where is the double-disc Special Platinum Edition???

Well, perhaps not EXACTLY, but that’s what comes to mind when I reflect of the third season of Reboot. The first of Reboot was Saturday morning cartoon fare. Ample, but but not unbelievable. The second season was DEEP, and contains my approved episode of the entire series, ANDRAIA. But the third season is probably the most accepted, and the four episodes on this DVD are probably the reason why.

The first episode, Icons, is one of my all-time current episodes of anything ever. In a position inspired by the Seven Samurai and The Fine Seven, a now grown-up Andraia and Enzo Matrix must benefit some unlikely heros keep a system which is in such poor condition that another lost game will undoubtedly cause it to atomize. This epsisode features a frosty atmosphere, grand dialog, and a game inspired by Conan the Barbarian (but with the heroes of the system rebooting as scotish warriors, including Matrix rebooting as William Wallace) . Anime fans will undoubtably seek the background motion carry out broken-down when Matrix fights is fighting a gargoyle (a total anime-style flying through the air moment) .

The second episode is a Star Hotfoot tribute that any Trekkie will esteem to death. Most of the episode is about Matrix and Andraia taking sides, working out their disagreements, and (oh yeah) finding and destroying a virus. Stunning immense.

Buy,Download, Or Stream ReBoot – Season III, Vol. 2 – The Net! Click Here

The third episode is a trot. In a LONG reference to the outmoded display The Prisoner (which I unforetunately have not seen), Matrix and Andraia derive themselves benefit in Mainframe (or is it Mainframe? ), trying to salvage out who the Mysterious #1 is, and what the secret is that he is holding. This epsisode ends in Matrix realizing that he needs to renew his efforts to procure help home to Mainframe, and never allow himself to give up.

The fourth episode is more of what made the first episode in the third season so broad. Old-school anime/sci-fi wild west action. Our heroes land in a system resembling Tatooine, which contains a space-port. But faster than you can say Star Wars, the situation rips wide initiate, with Well-kept Viruses, Unsuitable Guardians, and the Entire Obtain eager in a difficulty that only Matrix can end. If that wasn’t enough for you, you gather to explore Matrix’s gun go into death blossom mode, a crazy shootout, and one-on-one quickdraw duel featuring the music and camera-work of The Reliable, The Unpleasant, and The Hideous.

This DVD has everything you could want. Grat set, titanic characters, tremendous sound, grand animation, mountainous action, and enough subtle references to fabricate any movie/tv/sci-fi/fantasy fan smile. A must take for the animation fan.

I’ve been waiting for these DVD’s to reach out for a long time. This cartoon is probably the best animation I’ve ever seen because it’s computer-generated, making it very genuine. The set of season 3 (share of which is on this DVD) is very well-thought out, and the characters are awesome (especially Bob and Mouse) . I esteem the character development and the relationships that we scrutinize invent in season 3 too. The imagination keep into the status, the characters and this indicate in general, is pure genius. All three of these DVD’s are going straight to my wish list!

The film consists mainly of lots of Orb photos interspersed with interviews with people who have spent years studying them. Among them, Miceal Ledwith, of What the Bleep fame, who has taken over 100,000 Orb photos and probably has one of the largest collections in the world.

We also hear from J.Z. Knight, a physicist, and an artist. The film doesn’t attempt to exhibit, disprove, or scientifically analyze the Orbs. Rather, it speaks to what it could mean for humanity to be in contact with “beings” from another dimension that seem to be attracted to adore and happiness.

Could Orbs be higher dimensional beings? Are they here to reveal us something? To usher in a unusual belief? Contemplate the film and resolve for yourself.

Watching this movie is a groundbreaking experience! It thoroughly explores the orb phenomena and gives us genuine proof that orbs, which are golden spheres of light, exist and have consciousness. The Mead family, who are the creators of this film, have done their homework. We gaze that orbs have been with us through time, and appear to be showing up more frequently now that we can understanding them through the medium of digital photography. The filmmakers retract us on a rush exploring all about orbs and how they manifest. They demonstrate in depth interviews with people who have had experience in studying orbs, including two physicists who recognize at the science of the phenomenon and address doubts and skepticism. The images of the orbs are incredibly splendid, and we can peruse that orbs answer to treasure and joy. I came away from this movie feeling uplifted and with an expanded belief of reality. Best of all, I can catch digital pictures of orbs and experience them for myself.
